The Bliss is Dead (Honouring Windows XP)

Posted by Diego Andrés Díaz, Apr 11, 2014.

Maybe some of you where living under a rock and didn't know that Microsoft cease to offer technical support for Windows XP this week. This decision has been regarded as the end of this famous and widely used OS.

Although, i am here not to tell the history of the rise and fall of XP, but to talk about its "face"

This image is named Bliss and was the default wallpaper in W XP. According to Wikipedia that hill is located in 3101 Fremont Drive (Sonoma Highway),  in the Sonoma county. ( here you can see the location on Openstreetmap: )

Now that hill is covered with vines

I want to believe that some of you have driven by the Bliss hill. That you know what grape variety is planted there. Maybe some have tasted the wines produced with those grapes. Do you?

Being it is in Carneros it is likely Chard or Pinot. Maybe Chandon or Gloria Ferrer for sparkllng. Vino Farms manages most of the vineyards on that side of the highway short of Ramal. I could find out though.

OK, here's the scoop.

In 2001 Domaine Carneros bought the property from the Stornetta Family who are legendary in Sonoma County for their milk and other dairy products. The land was grazing pasture for milk cows. Talk about terrior!

Anyhow, the 140 acre parcel is planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The grapes are used in Domaine Carneros Sparkling Wine. The Domaine is about 4 miles East of the vineyard along the same Hwy 121. No vineyard  designate sparkling other than "Estate", which this is not, so you will never know for sure if what you are drinking has come from that spot or not.

This concludes todays lesson! ;)

Snooth is so great.  Where else would I learn such triviata.

And, I'm still hanging on to XP.  Eventually, enough stuff will stop working and I'll have to buy a new computer.

Sounds like you're a true Windows user, Mark.

Aka, a glutton for punishment...

and I would like to add that's why I love the wine world and the sense of place that permeates it all over.

Thanks OUTTHERE for your research and lesson.

Diego, thanks for giving this otherwise anonymous graphic a real place in the world.  OT, nice work.  Probably one of the many vineyards I drove past and wondered where the cows are going to go when all this planting is done.  At least this isn't down in the flats in some former swampland or in a place more suitable for fruit trees like a good part of the Napa Valley floor.
