The best rose I've had all year

Posted by Brad Coelho, May 21, 2009.

At half the price of Tempier and a stylistic counterpoint to Mordoree, this exemplifies why my knees buckle from great Pinot Noir rose.

Lucien Crochet Pinot Noir Rose '08,
It seems like there is something about Sancerre’s pedigree that bodes exceptionally well for Rose (or it could be simply due to the Pinot Noir influence) and Lucien Crochet’s ’08 is a case and point. The nose is redolent of the strawberry fields I used to traipse through as a kid, w/ flickers of green apple peel, rose petals, watermelon and chalk dust scents filling out the bouquet. The mouth-feel has a crystalline purity to it, akin to the juicy sensation of biting into freshly picked fruit. This is a seamless beauty, w/ uncanny finesse and a nervy mineral core that unfolds itself slowly on the long finish. It may seem crazy for me to say, but this rose seems crafted to age a la Cotat, 92 points.

That's been a consistent winner over the past few years.

I am definitely behind the gun here, I need to get started on my Rose exploration!

Sounds delicious but I would opt to drink this now, let us know how your ageing experiment goes!

The reason I took that leap is from Josh Raynold's bottle of '99 Francois Cotat Rose that blew away any preconceived notion I'd had of aging a Pinot Noir based Rose. I always opt for youth and vibrancy over the gamble of cellaring something like a rose, but I honestly think this pup has got the structure.

Get your rose on Greg!

I always liked roses personally. Most people consider them inferior wines tough but I´ve had much pleasure drinking roses, even more than certain kinds of well known wines. One should not be prejudiced about wines that are less popular, in fact, great surprises may come from them. Try white wines from Setubal, Portugal, made from moscato grapes and you will understand what I mean. Seeya.
