Our New Site Header

Posted by Chris Carpita, Dec 1, 2012.

EDIT: the header is visible to everyone now  - the idea behind it is to bring out some of the features and pages on the site that we've put a lot of time into in the last year, and are (hopefully) more useful to you.  One example is our new page that brings together GDP's videos.

Please let us know your thoughts!

Not loading but the pic looks nice.

I like it.  Seems to be much cleaner and more intuitive.

Are the GTIs going away?  I had to look pretty hard (Click "Food + Wine" and the old header comes up) to find it.

@Emark - yes unfortunately we never managed to get a groundswell of activity on the GTI pages, so those will be discontinued - we'll probably switch to wine-of-the-month badges in 2013 to coincide with the Snooth Wine Buyer's Guide editorial schedule.  We're also working on ways of reviewing wines + getting badges with our iphone app (+ other mobile methods), which will get a lot of attention over the next few months.

Looking forward to it.

Like it, but almost didn't see the shrunken forum link on the right! (in actual header, not copy/pasted in OP)

So, my comment is:  I found the forum cause I was looking for it.  Having it blacked out at the edge of a blackened margin, and shrunken as well,  makes it disappear.  Which is ok if snooth is not wanting to promote a message board forum so much.  Newbies may have a hard time finding this. Depends what the snooth business model is striving for.

Simple and functional. Like it.

I think NapaGirl has a good point.  Can you please make the Forum Link more obvious?

Reply by Chris Carpita, Dec 5, 2012.

To your point NapaGirl - checked out the stats and it was almost exactly equal between the 2 splits (old forum link vs new forum link), so it's not hurting traffic to the forum.   Agree it could be a bit larger so it's easier to click.

The forum is what I have bookmarked so I haven't been subjected to the header. At least in y case, and i would imagine in many others, the clicks o that button are not an issue. The new one only shows up on my iPhone though and with it I could not find the forum button until I expanded the page 5x.

The problem with Forum link (I felt the same way) is that new users will have a harder time finding it.  You want new users on the Forum--it's what keeps people here over the long haul, IMO, even if they never contribute.  Over time, the numbers will drop--right now, your attrition rate is probably pretty low, and the majority of folks going there are looking for it, but it is too easy to miss.  Just one opinion.

I still like it better than the new design over at CT which drives me nuts.

We'll see what we can do about the link - it's definitely harder to use on mobile devices than I would like.  Change is always difficult, so I think it has to be accompanied by some kind of substantial improvement.   In our case, we felt that adding the new grape/region/winery glossaries, video pages, price search, and food & wine pairing guides warranted changing the navigation header because those features have so much more utility than what is pointed to in the incumbent nav.
