- Tell me about Ghisolfi - plus TN on 99 Barolo - Bricco Visette
I've seen Ghisolfi's Baroli around for the last several years but had never tried one until recently. The 2000 Bricco Visette showed very well at a dinner at 11 Madison a couple of months ago. The 99 Bricco Visette I drank at home on Thursday was even better.
I'm curious to know more about the winery if anyone knows. Greg?
The 99 was very unforgiving at first -- very tannic with little aroma or flavor initially. But it opened up surprisingly quickly after a decanting and a few minutes in the glass. Like several other 99s I've had recently, it fleshed out quickly and became quite fruity and ripe. On the nose, there were nice ripe black cherries at first, then more classic nebbiolo notes of rose hips with black and red licorice. In the mouth, the ripe black cherries carried over, along with intense licorice of both shades. Definitely riper than your average Barolo, but not at all jammy, and with the structure and balance to keep it lively. It was a great match with meat ravioli and chanterelles and butter. 92+ I'll save my other two bottles for a couple of years, but it's a pleasure to drink right now.

You need to talk with Dr. Marty!
He is Mr. Ghisolfi, a winery I plan to visit next time I am in the region.
