Tastings and wine basics

Posted by Elaine Fernandez, Jan 19, 2009.

I moved to Albany about 2 years ago and don't know much about how or where to find good wines here. Specifically, I would love to know if there are any restaurants up here that have food and wine pairing menus. I would also like to know if there are wine tours nearby. I don't know a lot about wine, but I really enjoy wine. I want to know how and/or where I can learn the basics about wine while trying new types. Thank you!!

Hi Elaine and welcome to Snooth!

If you go to the Social root page, just click on Social in the bar above, you'll be able to find members who live by you. I'll see if I can't wrangle up an Albany-ite or two to get things started!

As far as learning about the basics of wine this is a great place to start. Throwing a wine tasting party with some friends canbe a great way to sample a variety of wines in one night without breaking the budget or drinking way too much. Rachel recently put together a great tasting -

And finding a trusted retailer is essential. I'll see what I can do about getting you some info on the stores in your neck of the woods!

Hi Elaine,

Do you mean Albany, NY?

Empire Wines in the Northway Mall has a good selection and some good prices, but mostly I buy on the Internet or go over to the Berkshires to buy wine locally. Nejaimes has 3 stores. Spirit Shoppe has one. Both have good selections and prices and some nice tastings. Get on their email lists if you're not already.

The Fort Orange Club has monthly tastings. I don't go because men have to wear jackets and ties, but several of my friends go. They seems quite diverse and broad (the tastings).

I believe the Desmond and Cafe Capriccio do wine dinners from time to time. Check their websites or Metroland.

Let me know if you have other questions. I've lived up here for 25 years.

Ken

It's right in downtown Albany just west of the old Capitol Building on State Street. Here is their website:
