Tasting Party Recommendations for 2004 Cabernet?
Posted by jnusser, Sep 6.

Hi all, a group of friends is organizing a tasting for 2004 Cabs in the range of $80 - $100 / bottle. Anyone have a fabulous recommendation that fits?

Thanks!

How many wines are you looking for?

I'm guessing we're talking all California?

My favorites include but are not limited to:

Ramey, any Vineyard, or try them all!: http://www.snooth.com/wine/ramey-cabernet-sauvignon-larkmead-vineyards-2004/

a bit of a slepper from Provenance: http://www.snooth.com/wine/provenance-oakville-napa-valley-beckstoffer-kalon-vineyard-cabernet-sauvignon-2004/

and a less expensive contender, Eberle Reserve:http://www.snooth.com/wine/eberle-winery-cabernet-sauvignon-reserve-2004/

Line em up and let her rip!

Would love to hear about the results of that tasting.

Hope this helps.

Wow, thanks for an awesome list! I'm only bringing a couple wines, but we should have a great mix. I'll definitely report back.

I was looking at Montelena, Etude & Ramey - it's nice to have another vote for those :)

Based on feedback, research & most importantly - availability at local wine stores, I ended up with a Marco di Giulio Diamond Mountain Cabernet. Very nice, but it was up against stiff competition. Here's a list of what we ended up with:

2003 Quintessa Red - http://www.snooth.com/wine/2003-quintessa-rutherford-2003/

2002 Del Dotto Cabernet - http://www.snooth.com/wine/del-dotto-cabernet-sauvignon-rutherford-estate-2002/

2007 Caymus Cabernet - http://www.snooth.com/wine/caymus-cabernet-sauvignon-napa-2007/

2004 Marco di Giulio - http://www.snooth.com/wine/marco-digiulio-cabernet-sauvignon-diamond-mountain-district-2002/

2004 Caymus Special Edition - http://www.snooth.com/wine/caymus-special-selection-cabernet-sauvignon-2004/

2004 Dunn (Howell Mountain) - http://www.snooth.com/wine/dunn-cabernet-sauvignon-howell-mountain-2004/

All of these wines are beautiful, which made picking a winner very difficult. In the end, however, there can only be one...

The 2002 Del Dotto was the definite winner, followed by the 2004 Dunn and the 2004 Caymus Special Selection for 2nd & 3rd respectively. The Marco di Giulio came in #5 out of 6, but ahead of the 07 Caymus. I wouldn't hesitate to reccomend any of these wines though - a nice showing of CA cabs.
