Talk bug: too easy to double-post

Posted by gr, Mar 12, 2008.

See http://www.snooth.com/talk/topic/vc-wear

I think what happened there is that I tapped both the trackpad and the button on my MacBook... but because the text of my last comment doesn't get cleared from the text input field after clicking the submission, there was nothing to prevent the double post. (Er, I'm assuming blank posts are prevented...?)

Beyond mechanical mishaps, I've observed co-workers double-click items on screen that should only be single-clicked, and I work in IT. Would it be that big a deal to blank the text box after the submit action?

Ahem. Wow. And in the course of this evening, that's already fixed?

Mark, go to bed. Or at least out.

Actually did that last week -- perhaps you needed a new JS file? Browsers can be pretty good at holding on to things.

Incidentally, on the list is a better preview step for replies. We're pretty happy with the new topic preview but we also don't want to lose the quick reply flow which works pretty well. Point is, you'll have this soon.

Gr - what a great post, until mark blew his cover by admitting he fixed it last week, we were looking like a super responsive company

My browser was absolutely still keeping things in the text box after posting last night and then suddenly stopped. (Perhaps I'd quit and restarted it, but I don't think so.)

Philip, that does, for the record, essentially fix the double-posting problem (because there's nothing left to post by the second click), doesn't it? Or is there still a race condition?

Nope, still possible to double-click faster than AJAX refresh. Oh well.

ok, shift-reload, the js is supposed to disable the button for X milliseconds, eh?

Race conditions blow. It may not be worth trying to fix this any further, ya know...
