- Tales of the Cocktail 2009
So there was this theory that Mark and I would discuss my posting directly to the Snooth blog about this cocktail conference I'm attending in New Orleans for the next six (YIKES!) days, but we were both too busy having actual fun at RBoulanger's family's place upstate to bother with any of that (although Mark did get most of the way through a PHP program to calculate the number of disparate drinks we could make with the alcohol available, but decided it was a bit silly when the numbers started coming back in scientific notation).
That may still get sorted out for a post-facto summary of the event, but if you're curious about the lay of the land at the get-go, please feel free to have a look at http://alcoholi.st/2009/07/tales-of-the-cocktail-2009-begins/
And, incidentally, for more about that 4 July party, see http://alcoholi.st/2009/07/tiki-drinks-for-the-fourth/

(For the record, I've started putting transcriptions of my notes up. It'll take a few free days to get through all of them, and my days aren't overly free right now, but I'll get there.)

I heard good things about the event. Saw some wet friends in pics.
Have you heard about the Manhattan Cocktail classic here in NYC?
Was it mentioned down there by any chance?

Was that the even that took place the week or so before Tales? If so, my friend Misty (from Drink in Boston) was competing, and I think she did pretty well. She also took second place in the "Morgenthaler's Swag Bag" competition at Tales, and Tad Carducci, of Tippling Bros, (who you may also know? DSWE's east coast brand rep for Plymouth Gin, Averna, maybe a couple of other things) won the Leblon Cachaca competition, for which the trophy was this gigantic statue of a muddler, in gold, which was a thrill to get home.

Oh, and Misty was doing a rum (I think?) based drink at the Cocktail Hour thing Wednesday night that she garnished with ground coffee (ground fresh through with a cheese grater) that was *excellent*.

(In case anyone cares, I'm working through transcribing my notes - see http://alcoholi.st/ - this week while I'm out of town for work. A proper summary will follow that.)

Nice going!
So how does one make a decent cocktail with "diluted" spirits.
Is there an Ohioan?

As you can see from the labels on those bottles -- http://alcoholi.st/2009/07/buying-booze-on-sunday-in-ohio/ -- it's not exactly the Finest Spirits that are going after the Ohio market. I know of no pre-existing Ohioan or similar, but if I can find adequately small bottles, I'll take a shot at some possibilities. They'll be things like Dayton, Cleveland, Columbus, and Akron, though. ;^>
