- Summer Whites
I had a great white wine at the bar in Arnie Morton's the other night. Livernano L'Anima Bianco.- I wrote about it here: http://nowandzin.blogspot.com/2009/08/tasting-notes-livernano-lanima-bianco.html
This one might be a little easier to find:
Yalumba Viognier 2007 So Australia: Barossa Valley $11
This wine is from So. Australia. Quite a nice little wine. Pale yellow in color with a nondescript nose that hinted of pear or melon. It's a full-bodied white with a creamy mouthfeel and some minerality. I think there's a little oak there, and the acidity level seemed to come and go, but it was alright paired with salad, roast chicken and hummus. Had sort of a chardonnay feel, but a little leaner and not buttery. Good sipper, good with light food.
What kind of whites are you drinking in the hot weather?

I like Viogniers (unoaked, I think), Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonel, and Vidal Blanc. I like off-dry whites that have some effervescent characteristics.

You must be from a cold-weather region, right? I've never had Chardonel or Vidal Blanc. Viognier I love, and Sauvignon Blanc is great with food, but I usually don't sip it on the porch.

I prefer more mineral whites, Muscadet, Pinot Bianco, Txacoli, some racy Sauv Blancs, and some of the southern Italian whites Fiano, Greco, Falanaghina, Verdiccio.
i would gladly sip any on the Porch!

Txacoli, Falanghina, yes! I also like the minerals. Have you tried the Spanish varietal, Verdejo? There's a varietal called Verdelho which is also nice. Chenin Blanc from Vouvray, yum. Love white blends...Conundrum and Tangent's Ecclestone are two faves.

Three types I find great for summer--
Just off dry, Kabinett level Riesling- LIght, low alcohol, and refreshing.
Oregon Pinot Gris- Crisp, very flavorful, just be careful to avoid any that trumpet oak aging, as it kills the crisp, clean style and makes them heavier.
Albariño from Spain- Lots of acidity, lots of flavor.

Yes! to Riesling and Albarino. I have never tried Oregon's Pinot Gris - I'll have to do that. I like some Torrontes, too.

If you see a bottle of Godello from Spain, grab it. Was virtually extinct, now made in modest quantities. Good minerality, crisp acids, citrus and floral notes with great aromatic nose.
