i am looking for a good 2003 red wine that i can purchase and cellar till my twins 21st birthday 2024.
preferably organically grown grapes.
any suggestions?
i especially love pinot noir

Many of the better red burgundies (pinot noir) will last this long and age well. Pinot Noir's a delicate grape however so you will have to have good storage conditions to have it last this long.

wonderful ! and thank you phillip ! any info about 2003 pinot noir choices that won't break the bank?
plus- does anyone know if the less sulphite organically grown wines age as well as the non-organic wines ( which have more sulphites, of course.)

If you can get your hand's on it: Frog's Leap, Cabernet or their Rutherford bottling. Organic, yes.

Non-organic wines do not have more sulfites by default. You should find high concentrations in cheaper wines and more commercial wines (any of the big brands) because their grapes are often of uneven ripeness and need sulfites for stability. Small grower wines and European wines in general have lower amounts of sulfites.

Beware - wines that are labeled as low in or free of sulfites usually have problems aging more than 3 to 5 years.

As for the 2003 vintage, I think you have to be very careful here. I am going to go out on a limb and contradict Philip. 2003 was really hot in Burgundy and those wines are not going to be long-lived. You would be better off with a Barolo, red Bordeaux over $30, or a California Cabernet. Of course you could always spring for a 2003 Vintage Port and hold it until 2033 since most 21 year-olds that I know don't fancy red wine!

@RBoulanger - i was trying to stick to pinot noir, but now i've quickly read up on that season's weather, its a tougher sell. I like the idea of a port, or even a vintage spirit. The spirit (brandy or whatever) is unlikely to be drunk in one night and so the significance of it can be spread out over multiple evenings.

These guys (http://www.baronfrancois.com/index....) make vintage armagnac's each year, although you'll have to wait 5 years to grab the 2003.

Good suggestion.

Anna - Armagnac (a form of brandy similar to Cognac) and Port, are both vintaged and do not need to be consumed at one sitting.

If you are looking for a nice Pinot Noir I'd suggest Saintsbury's Brown Ranch Reserve. It gets you away from the hot 2003 that France went through, California pinots from that year are reviewing well. I've had the '99 and a couple other vintages, its one of my favorite pinots.
