Starbucks is selling 'lifestyle' as much as they do coffee drinks so why not? I think they have smart enough marketing people that they can figure out a way to make it work.

I'm pretty sure Walgreen's already do here in California. Longs (CVS) does for sure.

Savon/Osco/Albertsons and other pharmacy chains have sold wine in California for decades...

Alberstons? What's that? ;-)
They are now called Lucky here in California.

According to the closest CA native at hand, they used to be Lucky, then Albertsons, now back to Lucky.

Starbucks cofee is dreadful.
I got hold of their business development plans in the mid 90's while exploring a partnership with them.
Those plan convinced me never to shop at Starbucks, unless it's 6 am and I'm at an airport and that is the only coffee so the chances of my drinking wine in a starbucks is, shall we say, slim.

Interesting, Greg. I was in Seattle at the end of '94 and came within an inch of doing a deal to bring Starbucks to Japan. I let it go because of other commitments, and undoubtedly ended up missing lots of greenbucks because of that. They found others to do the job and now are as ubiquitous here as on the West Coast in the US. Tilly's and Segafredo are much smaller competitors, while domestic ripoffs of the Starbucks model number more than even the Starbucks. Japanese do like their caffeine fixes. Tilly's is no better than Starbucks, Segafredo too few and far between, and I can't stomach the copycats, so I end up frequenting Starucks more than I might like.
Oh, John an Adam, the supermarkets have flipflopped but the pharmacy chain names not as much. Seems to be some difference between Northern California and SoCal, too...

Can you say Cosi? If wawa is taking away their market share in coffee, why not do the next best thing? I'll be curious to see their selection.

At first I thought it meant that Starbucks would brand bottles of wine. Which made me think it would have a line of wines available on the shelf at grocery or liquor stores.
But that isn't what the article says Starbucks plans to do. Instead it says they are taking a few stores, changing the name, taking away the logo, and planning to sell wine and beer...along with coffee I presume? Starbucks plan to sell wine is unclear to me, but if it means it will turn a few stores into wine/beer bars I would check it out, especially if they could put the wine into a cup that I could take back to work and drink on the down low...
