Sonoma chardonnay

Posted by pamelajane, Jan 24, 2010.

I was served a chardonnay from Sonoma that was 'something River' or 'River something', but not Russian River. It was a wonderful oakey/buttery chardonnay. Might anyone have an idea what it might have been? The person who served it doesn't remember.

The butteriest Chard I ever tasted was a 1997 Simi Russian River Reserve.

Well, there is the famous Rochioli vineyard called River Block ... but the only producer I know about that uses that vineyard J. Rochioli. :-)

I've always liked batches of Rochioli from that vineyard... :-)

FYI, River Road runs all along first the south then the north side of the Russian River, pretty much from (just north of) Santa Rosa, past the Sonoma County Airport and Forestville, to Hacienda where it crosses the river, then through Hilton, Guerneville, Monte Rio and lots of redwoods, to the mouth where the river meets the Pacific at Jenner. As such a central presence in the daily lives of Sonoma residents (and visitors) it tends to be referred to a lot, including in many business names. Long ago you'd just see highschool kids dragracing, deer standing mid-road, or spaced-out folks taking their time experiencing the universe as they crossed the road. That is, when the road wasn't frequently washed out by floods. Nowadays there are as many grapevines as redwoods alongside the road, and the cars and travelers are a lot more sedate and affluent-looking....

I think River Roads Vineyard might have been the one. Thank you! We might just have to try all the suggestions made and see which one we like best.
Thank you!

@dmcker- you must've lived there?? Lovely area! I regularly go to a vac rental in Jenner where I can swim where the Russian meets the sea (river side, of course!) and go on tasting ventures!!
