So what is your favorite wine of this past year?

Posted by napagirl68, Feb 5, 2011.

I know we love all types of wine.. and it does depend upon the food pairing, but does anyone just have that favorite wine... the "go to" wine when you want something great?

I'll tell you mine... 2008 Lioco Sonoma Coast pinot noir.  I have tasted SO much pinot this year- even recently- that I really liked.  I have even tasted extensively up in Willamette.  But I keep coming back to this wine.  I, personally, LOVE this wine!

So what is yours?

I drank about one bottle of wine a week in 2010.I enjoyed all of them althogh some were better than others.I don't know about declaring a favourite because they are all different and accompanied different foods but now each time I drink a new wine I review it on Snooth.I see that you like pinot noir as I do.I did enjoy a bottle of Jura and also a bottle of Premier Cru Givry, both of which I wrote up on Snooth.

It is a hard thing to pick a favorite.. I totally agree.  I based my decision as the one that followed me through the seasons, and I could sip sans food.  You have to love pinot for this one... my husband hates pinot so more for me!

NG - you raise an interesting couple of challenges with picking the "wine of the year" eg food/no food, sharing with your partner etc

My wife whilst drinking a chardonnay on Friday night said she loves it with food but struggles with drinking it without food.  I tend to agree with her that chardonnay is a great food wine but not as much fun on its own - thoughts?

So many great wines in 2010

Champagne - 96 Salon and 96 Krug [Wifes 50th Birthday with a group of great friends.]

White - 2000 Grossett Polish Hill Riesling, with a bunch of friends including some winemakers it blew us all away, great old aged riesling.

Pinot - 99 Domaine Armand Rousseau Gevrey Chambertin Clos St Jacques Premier Cru at a wine dinner absolutely brilliant Burgundy

Red - 82 Chateau Leoville Las Cases St Julien Bordeaux and 96 Penfolds Grange Australia at wine dinners with good friends

Sticky - 89 Chateau d'Yquem - nearly as good as sex at a wine dinner with good friends

Best US Wine - 97 Caymus Vineyards, Special Selection Napa Valley USA Cabernet Sauvignon

Best Italian Wine - 05 Prunotto Occhetti Nebbiolo d’Alba

Best Spanish Wine - Need to try some this year

Best German - 03 JJ Prun Auslese

To pick one wine from this list is tough but I think I will go with the 96 Salon because it was the perfect wine to celebrate my wifes 50th [we have been together for 33 years] and she is a champagne fanatic

Felton Road Pinot Noir 02.

New Zealand, particularly Cental Otago, is making some dynamite Pinot Noir.

This is the one that I remember, because I didn't expect it, But of the name wines, I liked Grands Echezeaux 00 Gros Pere & Freres and Cos St. Denis Jadot, I believe the 93.

Nothing in the New World excited me that much, perhaps with the exception of Hope and Grace Chardonnay 07. They managed to exercise some rarely found restraint in the use of oakin a full-bodied Chardonnay.

Felton Road are making some good stuff, but interestingly in a line up at my last wine dinner the 08 Felton Road Block 3 was a bit on the floral and light side and lacked a bit of intesity and depth.  It was up against 09 Bindi Block 5 from the Macedon Ranges in Victoria Australia and an 02 Armand Rousseau GC Clos St Jacques PC.

Still a very good wine but just missing that bit of complexity compared to the others [The AR was head and shoulders above both New World Pinots but its price was too!!]

The 07 Felton Road Block 5 is a stnning wine and I think will age very well

Pyramid Valley, whichever vineyard, kicks tail on the Felton everytime I've tasted them together....

Sonoma Coast is a great spot...I heard there is a 2009 Bedrock Sonoma Coast Syrah that's an incredible buy @ a little over $20.00

Haven't really found a favorite every day drinker, but I've tasted many good ones.  Still, the 2008 Troplong Mondot I had a couple weeks ago at the UGC sticks out to me.

I had a bottle of that 09 Bedrock SC Syrah last night. Phenomenal buy @ $20. Kind of a slutty Syrah with huge black fruits, savory richness and a big finish. Drank the whole thing myself. Can you say lush?

My personal favorite of the last year was probably the 06 Agharta "Exhibit B" from Pax Mahle of Wind Gap Wines followed closely by the 06 Lillian Syrah. Or was it the young but oh so luscious 08 Rivers Marie Cabernet. Best new winery find? Bedrock Wine Co by a longshot.

Right on OT, where did you hear about the Bedrock?

Another wine that I really enjoyed last year was the Shafer Merlot 2007 - (85% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon)

I was reading this extremely informative thread and got caught up in talk about Bedrock so I bought some 08's just before they sold out and then got the 09 release as well. Good juice!

I love all the reds, my favs being the Cabs and Merlot's.  However, I know what you mean when you say that "special wine and you know it's the one" well mine is Layer Cake Malbec, something about it does me good. So when I'm good, I treat myself to a slice of the Layer Cake.

I almost feel the need to try a bottle of Layer Cake to see if is as bad as GDD [and most of the Snooth Community] says it is or whether James has discovered a special elixir?

Be nice!  everyone has their own palate.

My husband HATES my Lioco... thankfully :-).  He likes big, purple, port-like Zins and Syrahs.  I can find a FEW of those varietals that I think are great, but it is just not my palate.  I am a sonoma coast or willamette pinot girl, as well as a cab franc, sauv blanc, and HUGE white rhone fan (viognier, marsanne, roussane, etc).  I also like the unusual reds, such as single vineyard Cinsault, mourvedre, grenache.  I am becoming a huge fan of Southern Rhones... CdPs, Gigondas.  But I still love my napa cabs too.  I am an equal opportunity wine drinker!  but that darned Lioco is my go to wine.  I think I need to taste more of their wines, since other clones are even more highly rated, as are their chards.

Well - Lefty does keep throwing in Layer Cake from "left(y) field" knowing he gets a reaction

NG - on the my Californian Wine post I talk about some calis I got my hands on, would value your opinion as a local

I was only poking fun because he always recos the same wine, NG, not because I think it stinks.  ;)

Last Year? Louis Latour, Beaune, a bottle of Pommard, I love Haut Bages Monpelou in the price category (Paulliac). Unfortunately, I don't keep any notes, I had a great bottle each of St. Emilion, Pecharmant and Pomerol. These wines are very reliable.
