It would be great if one of the Snooth Execs gave those of us who inhabit the forum a post to lets us know what is happening with Snooth and what are its future plans

Hang on as long as possible, self-respect and credibility be damned. And ignore the Forum completely--it's a rare beast that nobody in management currently can figure the value of.

I'd be curious what current management's exit strategy is.

 

Good question, though, Stephen. In future 'Site Feedback' tends to get more admin eyes than 'General Chat.'

I don't know that there is a model. It seems to be on auto-pilot.

And the auto-pilot isn't working very - case in point...posting totals  Al lost 69 over the span of 2 nights, I lost nearly 80, Mr. vinOvinO has been mis-credited with only 2 for the entire time he's been here.  Stephen has lost 85 in the same 4 day span.

The other long timers, except Mr. Derry who's totals bounce around the total he's now plus or minus 1 or 2 on any given day, continue to trend upward without any drop.

Why am I doing this?  IT apparently has no idea what's happening with me and my totals so I decided to track the people I communicate with the most.  I'd your permission to submit what I find here to them after a week.

I guess my curious nature is that I would like to understand what Snooth is trying to achieve as a business

Whilst I enjoy the information sharing between the forum community it seems to me that in my absence on the forum for a couple of years up until beginning of this year

It just seems to me that there is a lack of direction in what Snooth is trying to do and the number of forum contributors has dropped off

Iwas hoping that someone from the Snooth management team might make some comments on what was happening with the business

Stephen, we've all wondered for a long time, and first Philip (founder) leaving, then the next CEO Tomko (by that time I was on walkabout for a fair period, like you later) didn't help, and the heart-and-soul on the content side of GDP departing was the final dagger in the heart. Philip is pretty much a serial entrepreneur with a well-defined-and-exercised exit-strategy impulse and Snooth needed him in attendance longer if it were to reach even half of its initial promise. Now it's a pale, whispish, broken up and misty shadow of its former self. And what's left of  both Admin and Mgmnt thinks little of and pays attention less to the Forum. Very shortsighted, IMHO. 

Most of the content for awhile now on the Articles side has been simple regurgitations of press releases, or something that reeks of sponsored content. Mark A. who started as a key member of the tech team is now CEO and has somehow morphed to 'chief taster' and I believe his wife is somehow involved, too. Hard to imagine those articles driving a lot of traffic, nor the wine descriptions and ratings database which has always had numerous glitches. SEO is much weaker than it was in early years. Seems pretty much a basic maintenance and IV-drip type status, with none of the few remaining resources dedicated to the Forum. Unclear what NYC office space they may still have. Focus on advertising for revenue, I believe, though they've tried on two occasions to get some direct wine sales going. First time they had to stop because it clashed with another startup Philip had moved on to. The more recent occasion didn't face that issue, though I don't know how it has gone. Hard to imagine what board meetings are like these days. Could in the early years. Early on Philip was good at getting first few rounds of financing and they were flush for awhile. Don't know how they would drum up any funding these days. Very difficult to envision any kind of IPO now, and can't imagine who would want to buy them, though perhaps a fire sale could fit into someone's strategy...

Several of us have discussed this offline as well as here while you were away.

#1. Those are good thoughts, but short of an outright invitation from us to them, I don't see that happening. Those feelings have been expressed by some of the older snooth members here.  

#2  Since I've only been here for about a year now and don't have a base to work from - give me your impression as to where you thought it was heading and what it was doing to achieve that.  Should be interesting.

The Snooth brand doesn't have a good rep in the industry, rather it's built to appeal to novices and the casual crowd, which did appeal to me when I was starting out I suppose.

Apparently Snooth is enough of a cash cow to keep on chugging. For how long is the question, though to most of us it seems like a dead business moving forward in to the long term.

What ever is supporting the business model, I certainly hope it continues at least to the current level.  I still have a good time here, and learning about other wines and wine-related things (such as food pairings and things of this nature) makes it interesting.  

Hell, it's not costing us anything but a few minutes a day to delete the spam that keeps on coming.

And then there's Delectable. I've never visited the site - has anyone here? Supposedly something like this and now Galloni is adding his reviews if you pay him. But it's another site for novices, or so I've been told. Kind of like a Yelp with less of a community, although there's value to any community that becomes a real group of friends. The very small community here is why I keep in touch.

Interesting question, when I first joined Snooth the forum seemed to be a great place to debate wine related issues as well as share wine experiences.

It seemed to me that they were looking a becoming a vehicle to buy and/or source wine globally and to encourage wine education through the forum and articles

I sort of expected in to become the LinkedIn/Facebook of Wine but somehow the business model never developed.

Sadly the technology used has beed surpassed by many other sites and I think many of the serious wine writers have conceded they need an online model - funny about that.

Some may remember an early post of mine about Jancis Robinson being very critical of on-line forums and that there was a lot of information posted by those who were ignorant of wine. But people like her have quickly adjusted and a new wave of critics are dominating the wine media.

Unfortunately Snooth seemed to be far too slow at moving there model to adapt and got lost.  They probably need to get their commercial business to become more global quicker and to try and harness the forum to be a driver for wine sales exchanges etc.

My next question is what next because like Big Al I like the exchange of wine and food related info and seeing what happens and is happening in US and Japan.

What Snooth is today I don't know, but I do know what it will be remembered for in the trivia books.

In the history of the internet, what is the longest-running thread ever? I predict that one's going to be it.

Every now and then someone drops in for a one-time only post to tell everyone who's been here that we are full of crap and should shut up and listen to their one-time only advice and certainty. New post yesterday. In six months or so, there will be another.
