Snooth launches closed alpha release

Posted by Philip James, Apr 2, 2007.

It's been a busy few weeks but today the site moved into alpha. It's currently invite only, but if you are interested in getting an early look visit the home page and sign up.

Many elements are nowhere near complete, but the overall feel and functionality of the site is done.

Items complete: The massive database is loaded, indexed and the wine's key terms have been tagged (currently over 700,000 ratings and 150,000 reviews). You can search for a wine (we'll catch and correct tens of thousands of wine word mis-spellings). You can view, then review a wine (our software will then scan your review and extract key tags, saving you the effort of typing those in directly).

Items to come: The recommendation engine which is complete needs to be plugged into the site. After that there's a lot of work to be done on the community side (adding friends, creating networks, finding people with similar tastes etc.). There's still a tremendous amount of work to be done on the data side as well - tweaking the algorithms and adding new functionality.

We've all worked very hard on this, but I wanted to single out Mark, the company engineer, for his herculean efforts these last few days.

For those still waiting for an invite, please be patient. We're very close.
