Bonjour,
Mon nom est Martin. Je suis un passionné du vin et j'aimerais savoir si des amateurs de vin, parlant en français, se trouvent sur ce site. Il me semble qu'il serait agréable de discuter entre nous en français. De plus, si nous le faisons régulièrement, les dirigeants de ce site seraient plus enclins de traduire le site dans notre langue. Alors pour ou contre un Snooth en français?

Martin - i had to use Google Translate to get this:
" My name is Martin. I am passionate about wine and I wonder whether wine lovers, speaking in French, can be found on this site. I think it would be nice to talk us into French. Moreover, if we do regularly, the leaders of this site would be more inclined to translate the site in our language. Then for or against a Snooth in French?"
Its a good idea, very few threads have been conducted in a different language. We do have planned (2010) to translate Snooth into several foreign languages as we have 38% of our traffic non USA, with significant portions in the European countries of France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy etc...

I was actually able to understand it but actually posting in French is an entirely different story. If you don't mind responses in English, just post in French and see what happens.

Actually not a bad translation by Google. Not stylistically slick, but the gist certainly gets across. They don't do anywhere near as well into English if the language is not European and relatively close to English in structure. You should see what happens going from, say, Tagalog into Chinese, Thai into Japanese or Arabic into Hindi. From the '80s through the '90s I helped with several machine translation projects on supercomputers. Even going into and from English, where the best results are, it was common to see combat-fatigue-like attrition amongst humans who had to work editing the final product. ;-( There's still quite a ways to go, though real progress has been made.
So Philip, how does Snooth plan to implement such a transition?
