It's a great question. You know, it depends on your style a bit. Are you adventurous or do you like to know what you're getting into? If you'd like to do a little reading, there are some great tips here:

If you can find a wine bar around where you live with wine flights that ends up being a great way for an adventurous type to experiment with a few different kinds of wine without taking too much of a punch to the wallet. Ultimately, I think tasting many different things is the best way to discover wine!

There's such a thing as White Merlot (ie. pink wine made with merlot), but that will probably taste like white zin still...
I would either try to get your husband to try a dry rose (any varietal), ad that will be closer to a red wine (ie. more like your merlot), or try a sweeter/fruitier light red, maybe a Gamay from Beaujolais - its still got some of the merlot-esque spice, but its light and fruity and it might play to his pink zin tastes.
