Have an address in the states you could use Jen? A reliable relative or friend that you plan to see within the next year could work.

I'm in. I screwed mine up a little last year so getting out in front this year should prove to be helpful.

Jen, I got this reply from an acquaintance in Edmonton.

"A large number of California wines are exported to Alberta, so there is probably an excellent chance that the wine you plan to ship there is already in the market. If it is currently available there then the exercise should be relatively simple.

Contact either Wade Brintnell at The Wine Cellar in Edmonton, or Gary Jennings at Richmond Hill Wines in Calgary. Either should be able to inform you whether the wine is presently available in Alberta, and they should be able to provide you with some assistance in getting the wine to its destination. If the wine is not available in the market, and you wish to ship a case quantity, there is a process for a private import, but that can be an expensive proposition. Wade or Gary could fill you in on that, too.

Wade and Gary hold special import licences, in addition to retailing wines in Alberta, and either would be the best place to begin. I know that Wade has a temperature controlled warehouse, and likely Gary does also. The Consignment Warehouse, where the agent sponsored imports are housed, does not, and consumers take their chances on the condition of those wines in the general market. Temperatures at the Consignment Warehouse can escalate during the Summer months.

Hope that is helpful."

That should be of help to your secret Santa. For your recipient you can use a retailer already based in the States such as K&L, JJ Buckley etc.. And simply make the purchase online an ship it toyour recipient.

Add me.

Just a note to people when shipping - if you tell UPS or Fed Ex it's alcohol, they'll require the signature of the recipient. So like Foxall said, don't label it as such when you ship.

BTW, if there is any kind of wine you DON'T want, say so. Otherwise you might end up with a Sauvignon Blanc or something even worse!!

Glad to have you Greg.

We are sitting in the kitchen getting ready to do a draw of names so we can get this rolling. Then I'll send out detailed instructions to each participant.

ATTENTION: If you have yet to do it, please send me or post to the thread your preferences.

  • Country(s)
  • Varieties
  • What you do not drink
  • Style - Restrained, extracted, dry, off dry, new world, old world

Cheers!

For me it's pretty much anything but I'd prefer not to get something Spanish!

Probably not Sauv Blanc either.

Is that right?  I thought that consumers--i.e., just plain folk--could not legally ship alcohol at all in the U.S.  The one time I tried it and was declared that it was wine, the guy told me they wouldn't take it and handed it back to me.

whineo, unless I get one more person interested I'm afraid you're too late as assignments have already been sent. We'll hold out hope for you though.

Mark, the way to bypass that is to create a UPS (or FedEx) account on-line and print your own labels. This way you can put your label on the box yourself and drop it off at their facility, thus bypassing the retail helper person that tends to shut us wino's down.

Easier than that, you can just buy from a retailer and put in your recipient's address for the shipping address.

Foxall wrote:  I'm game--although I never heard back about the wine I gave.  Hmmm. I think we keep it to $25 or 30.  But I'm willing to hear other views

So should we put a note in our box saying something like, "Cheers from Napagirl!"  Or are we supposed to keep this totally secret?

I suppose we could do a vote on how we want to do the reveal. Reveal the name on the package or let the person try to guess who the wine came from based on what they received.

What say you all?

I'm all for it being secret until everyone has their wine in hand and has a chance to guess.

Yeah, I'd also say part of the fun is guessing who gave it to you.

Ok sounds great... let's keep it secret in shipping.

Then, we all guess?  Do we do a reveal thread?  Or a virtual?  LOL!
