I'm game--although I never heard back about the wine I gave.  Hmmm. I think we keep it to $25 or 30.  But I'm willing to hear other views.

Definitely in, and $25-30+ sounds good.

We should also qualify to board members who tend to stick around, so we can avoid what happened to Fox last year. Something like that should help out, otherwise, we were thinking newbies could get paired with other newbies.

My recipient from last year hasn't drank the wine yet. I don't blame him either. I guess a reveal week is fine but don't expect everyone to open their bottle and post notes. Your price point is fine. I'll leave the ceiling up to the Santa's but we should have at least a minimum value attached.

My recipient was not a newbie but only semi-active.  I actually like this as a way to consolidate some slightly newbie posters, folks like JenniferT, who seems hampered only by being in Canada.

Shipping wine across the border is no small feat!

BUMP!

Re-read original post to this thread for updates

We need the rest of you to speak up! GDP, EMark, GregT, LuchaVino, JenniferT, Eric Guido, JamesSulis, jtryka etal!

Once we have our cast of characters we can decide on a reveal date/week.

I need all the players to PM me their real name, shipping address (FedEx, UPS, GSO), wine preference. Once the complete roster is in place your Giftee will be chosen at random and assigned to you.

All in!!!  First time for this type of event and will be looking for advice, i.e., do you order from your favorite wine club and ship to your recipient or grab a bottle out of your stash and send it?  In my real work life, Operating Experience (learning from others) is the best way to avoid mistakes others have already made.

vinOvinO, your mileage may vary but I did both last year. I sent a bottle from my cellar to my recipient and when I heard about shipping issues preventing Eric Guido from getting his gift I ordered a bottle from a wine shop in his neighborhood and had it held will call for him.

For my assigned recipient I wanted to share something from my cellar that I thought he would appreciate. When he finally gets around to drinking it I'll know for sure if I was successful. I have faith though.

Bottom line, it may depend on shipping rules in the State where your recipient lives, whether you disguise your  shipment as something other than wine or if there happens to be a wine shop local to them that has wine you would like to purchase. Get creative.

Well, the list of participants so far is a bit intimidating...  But count me if you're willing to risk a newby :-)

Don't be intimidated by us. Who the heck are we anyways? ;)

Glad to have you aboard Journey!

Not any reason to be intimidated.  No one knows anything, we just have our prejudices!

What works?  Well, it's a pain to ship stuff because shipping companies get all crazy about wine, so you have to call it fruit juice or olive oil or something. On the other hand, ordering from some place closer to the recipient limits what is available.  Really, just the idea that you gave some thought to what the recipient likes and what reflects your enthusiasm is enough.

a number of places now, including wine.com, will ship to states that are not ok to ship to, through some sort of "middle" process that i don't really understand.  but I was able to ship to my friend in PA for her birthday and I she was all surprised and happy.  does anyone know more about this?

Sorry, I'm in the dark when it comes to archaic liquor laws.

We could use at least 1 more player to make the numbers even. Anyone?

I'm sure GdP will be down...can firm it up at a little event I hear is going on Saturday. We can also try to work on Mark, but I feel that's more of a long shot.

I missed this discussion till now....I think a secret santa is a fine idea!

I'd like to play for sure! I'm fairly sure I could get wine to my recipient. But do you think anyone would be able to get wine to me in Canada? I'm up to try to find some creative solutions here.

I'd love to play if I can figure out a way to get around shipping restrictions, etc.
