Second wine question

Posted by cigarman168, Mar 30, 2010.

Is Clos du Marquis really the second wine of Leoville-Las-Cases?

It is the second pressing of harvest grapes  at Chateau Leoville-Las-Cases

But read from the latest issue of Decanter that Leoville-Las-Cases is planning to make a second wine......grapes for Clos du Marquis  seem mainly from a separate vineyard, accordingly to Decanter.

Cigar

You are correct!

The vinyard is owned by Herbert Delon, the same owner of Chateau Leoville-Las-Cases.The actual harvest of Clos du Marquis comes from grapes grown on the land across the highway.

Not a bad location to be at. I have been there as a tourist.  Barton is just a bit south of this land. Poyferre is just a bit north.

Rumor has it, some of the left over Leoville-Las-Cases wine is added to the base grape harvest of Clos du Marquis.

All I know is that this is a $55 Bordeau and it is not bad!

So, Clos du Marquis was simply "regarded" as their de facto 2nd wine, but it has never been officially regarded as their "genuine" 2nd wine.  They are now offering their 2nd wine, because of replanting at the estate. It's called Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases. 2007 is the first vintage. Only 2000 cases are produced.
