Details for Schloss Johannisberger Grunlack Spätlese Rheingau 1971

My 1,000th wine rated on Snooth! Thanks, Greg, for sharing. Who's next to cross 1,000 wines here? Greg is moving fast, but there are a few people over 750 at the moment, so we'll see...

As you can see from the image below, its got a beautiful amber color and you can just see the oxidation in it:

The (un-maderized) German Riesling has a place in my heart as the first wine that I really liked. That being said, that glass looks more like a sherry.

Congrats on the 1000!

Pymonte - yeah it was pretty oxidized / madirized. Very interesting to try.

How does it compare to a "normal" spatlese? How are the flavor and texture affected?

It had lost some of its sweetness and a lot of the fruit had gone, instead it had a thicker consistency and an oxidized taste - it was basically becoming a sherry / Madeira.

Huh. That IS intersting. Wish I was there.

It was delicious in it's own special way. I found it less sweet and viscous than most. the acidity was still incredible vibrant so there was a disconnect between the maturity of the flavors against the backdrop of the very youthful feel of the wine. If more finos tasted like this i might be a more frequent drinker. Of course the 8% alcohol made it easy to drink.

This was definitely a real treat, thanks Greg. I agree about the acidity being very surprising. It was almost like someone had taken some madeira and spiked it with acid and sugar.

One thousand wines! Well, I guess it's more like 1020 now. I'd better get reviewing if I ever want to catch up.

Congrats, Philip!
