Santa Barbara County

Posted by WineDineTV, Mar 19, 2009.

Picture gently rolling California hills on a sunny day, their soft contours lined with vineyard rows as far as the eye can see. Majestic oak trees cast shadows over a long, rustic table filled with an abundance of scrumptious foods, savory wines, and sinful desserts. The laughter of family and friends fills the balmy lavender scented air - it’s like Paradise.

Not only is the landscape of Santa Barbara County naturally beautiful, its unique terroir of warm days, cool foggy coastal night air, and mineral rich soil blends perfectly to create stellar wine grapes of many varieties. In recent years, the savviest winemakers in the region have begun capitalizing on microclimates in their area that emulate those of fine wine regions in the world. They are now creating distinctively Californian versions that are reminiscent of the classics of Europe.

Santa Barbara County, which encompasses three distinct appellations: Santa Ynez Valley, Santa Rita Hills and Santa Maria Valley, retains its rustic charm while still providing memorable experiences for everyone from wine aficionados to novices. From the cattle ranches emerged a unique diamond which seamlessly combines the “cowboy lifestyle with the sophisticated down to earth elegance. It is known for romantic weddings, resort weekends, family vacations and of course the preferred daily tasting room visits.

The Oscar-winning movie Sideways inspired millions of people worldwide to try California’s Santa Barbara County wines and to gain first hand experience of the lush scenery and unique vineyard tasting rooms that provided backdrop to that movie’s quirky romance.

Here you can recharge your body and soul with locally grown healthy foods, award winning wines and magnificent sunsets.

Cheers,
Judit & Corina

I grew up in the Santa Barbara area, but haven't been back for ages. Any chance to hear specifics about the individual regions and wineries? Oh yeah, and I heard that the Wine Cask just closed....

Yes we are gearing up to present our over 30 winery interviews from Santa Barbara County. The Wine Cask was purchased from Dough Margerum (from Margerum wines) and the new owner has 2 more location one in Oxnard and the other in Calabasas. We hope that he will reopen this landmark restaurant soon. You can see the Barnder winery tasting on our website.

Landmark is a valid term for the Wine Cask restaurant and winebar. Think they've done as much over the years to support Santa Barbara wine and wine culture as anyone in any market or growing region. Unfortunate the most recent owner (before the closing) ran into so many problems, particularly since cutting down that lovely tree on the lot supposedly jinxed him...

Any chance of focusing on varietals as well as wineries?

Cheers
