Purchase US Wine From Toronto, Canada

Posted by Keiko, Feb 11, 2009.

Hi Everyone,

I'm facing a challenge here. I'm trying to buy a couple bottles of Turnbull Cabernet Sauvignon. I'm having the toughest time ever because US is not allow to ship wine to Canada on individual consumer demand.

I need to get the wine by first week of March. I've tried every where within the boarders and out of luck. =(

Anyone know where and how I can lay my hands on this wine without flying down to the states and still make the timeline??

P.S. I've tried to call the LCBO, but placing a special order will take 6-8wks, which it will be too late by then.

Have you thought about having a wine shop in Buffalo get them for you and picking it up from there? Most California wineries can ship to New York without difficulty.

Hi there,

I have searched and called the wine shops in Buffalo, they don't have it in stock. But I think I've found a way now. I'll have the wine ship to the UPS store at the boarder, and then I'll go and pick it up. =)

That's the ticket. If you can find a US citizen or two to cross the border with you I think they get to bring in wine without paying duties. Maybe 2 bottles each but I hear if they try and go with three that it's usually allowed since the law states a limit of 2 liters per person and 2 bottles, being 750ml each, don't actually reach the limit. However I am not an attorney and I did not stay in a Holiday Inn express last night so don't take my word for it!

@Keiko ... glad I could help. I grew up in Toronto so I know how frustrating it can be dealing with LCBO. It is funny ... the LCBO is one of the biggest wine buyers in the world but they make special orders so tough. Also, as Greg pointed out ... customs may be an issue. Since you'll be in the US for less the 24 hours you don't get any free declarations. You may just want to say that you are picking up a delivery and that is it.
