Price of a Wine Vs. Aging Potential

Posted by Chris Carpita, Jun 4, 2008.

Mark and I discussed this one for a little bit, and it seems like a lot of factors that affect price, such as the reputation of a vineyard, the quantity of original stock, and the amount of effort involved in producing the bottle, might have a positive effect on aging potential. Has anyone found any contradictory evidence, such as a $5 bottle of wine that was amazing after 15 years?

Hmmmm .... the best I can find (and taste) is the R Winery Boarding Pass

Aging potential of 6 to 8 years which isn't too bad for a $16 bottle of wine.

Then there is the EVIL Cab from R Winery which is also supposed to age 6 to 8 years

Varietal has something to do with it as well, but there's such a range of wines it's hard to pin down.

R Wines! I have to try some of their stuff -- maybe this weekend if I can swing it. A mission!

Mark beat me to it, but the only really cheap wines that need a lot of age that spring to mind are the tannats. You can get a $9 tannat and it needs to be at least 8 years old or its just too tannic. (the clue is in the name, when you hear tannat, you know its going to peel your gums back - luckily over time they do soften into quite an intriguing wine)

@Mark ... I highly recommend R Winery wines ... They really appeal to me and the price point is great.

Gah, not yet. I checked two stores this weekend and was unable to find any of their wines in stock. I'll probably place an order online soon... Finding a particular wine can be a pretty big pain when all you've got is the brick and mortar option.
