Post your Cabernet GTi notes here.

Adios Tempranillo, Hello Cabernet!

GTi makes the switch to Cabs and wait till you see what we'll be tasting this Thursday. A vertical of Gundlach Bundschu to commemorate their 150th anniversary! There will be a poetry slam sponsored by the winery all day on Thursday, 151 words or less on why wine moves you, and we'll be tasting along with the winemaker from 7 to 8 pm. That's this Thursday March 12th.

But don't let that prevent you from posting your notes about Cabernets near and far on this GTi thread.

I'll be back soon to start us off with a doozy!

May I jump in? :)
2005 Burgess Cabernet Sauvignon- Great structure and showful, this has the crème de cassis and kirsch notes I enjoy with a full mouth feel that is plush, elegant and abrupt all at the same time. A great value in today’s world of runaway pricing. 93/100

2005 Frank Family Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve- One of the days highlights: Big and bold but stylish and classy. Dark crème de cassis notes with an ultra pure and showy style. The tannins are complex, this is a beautifully balance wine. I like showy. 93/100

Those Frank Family wines do indeed have wonderful balance. http://www.snooth.com/wine/frank-fa... I rated the regular bottling a 92!

1995 Burgess Cabernet Sauvignon Library Selection- Fully matured with some bricking of the edges, this has some great aged cab notes of cassis, soy sauce, some earthiness, and a good dimension of red fruits throughout. Very admirable. 90/100

Here we go, new GTI!

Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five 2006
http://www.snooth.com/wine/shafer-c...
Red fruit, spice, cassis, very ripe, creamy aromas. Flavors are slightly tart, very smooth, lilting, morphing, well oaked, bright on the attack but mellowing out as it's held in the mouth. Wonderful smooth tannins, but oh so closed right now. Lay it right down.

Tasted at the Napa Valley Vintners tasting earlier this week.

Well good luck finding this!

http://www.snooth.com/wine/casa-de-...

I was lucky to have been in to wine in the early 80's when this was re-released and even luckier to have recently purchased a small cache of this remarkable oddity.

This is actually a wine made by Samuele Sebastiani, the founder of the eponymous Winery, though it was bottled by his son August several years after Samuele's passing.I will be featuring this in an upcoming blog post so I can't give away the whole story here but suffice it to say this piece of history is alive and kicking.

Perhaps this was never a great wine but it has aged extremely well and is still chewy and fruity. Over the course of several hours a touch of mustiness blew off and was replaced with some cardamom and cinnamon which just framed the red cherry fruit perfectly. If you ever happen apon a bottle be prepared for a treat!

The best thing about it is the back label with it's admonishment to "drink this wine well chilled"!

Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five 2006 (SnoothRank: 4/5)
(March 2009)
Big bold and showy style of rough and ready cabernet. Dense black currant with some camphor and tar. Some slight vanilla notes. Big chewy but sophisticated tannins with a nice balance throughout. I like the turn these have made with the re-branding of One Point Five. 91/100 myRating 4/5

Staglin Family Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 (SnoothRank: 4/5) USA > California > Napa (March 2009) 2005 Staglin Estate Cabernet Sauvignon- Dark purple tinged color. This has the classy crème de cassis and camphor I so love. A mid to heavy weight cab with great cassis, black cherry notes, some earth and some pencil shavings. Very seductive and pure, just what I believe these are known for. A year or two would surely make this a stunner. 92/100 myRating 4/5

Etude Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2005 (SnoothRank: 3/5)
Napa (March 2009)
Nice and fragrant nose. The mouth feel is lush and super structured. Some black and red fruits of cassis, blackberries, and pomegranate. A wonderful Cella’s chocolate wrapped cherry note. Some anise and tar. A good long finish. 91/100 myRating 4/5

Jones Family Vineyards The Sisters 2005 (SnoothRank: 4/5)
Sisters (March 2009)
6 hour decant. Deep ruby color. The nose is pure crème de cassis and kirsch royal. The palate reveals a nice pure sweet red & black fruit profile, and not the bad sweet type I detest. Great black cherry, black currant, cherry cola, pomegranate, with some soy, soil, and lead pencil shavings. This has a lushness not normally associated with wines at this price point. A medium to full bodied mouth feel that is long, elegant, and beautifully structured. The tannins are on the biggish side and a few years in the cellar will most certainly reward the owner. A creamy extended finish completes the package. I wanted to try this as I seen the Jones website still offering me more. I ordered 6 more. One of my favorite list purchases and one to surely keep on. A QPR in its class. myRating 4.5/5

Just finished a bottle of Bogle's 2006 Cab. It's, as usual with Bogle, a fantastic value for the price. It was $13.99 of pure love, with well-developed red fruit on the nose and initial taste, with a really nice backbone of tobacco, blackberry, and granite. Well-structured tannins and a beautifully long finish make this a better wine than many twice its price.

Simi Winery Reserve Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma 1995
(March 2009)
Dark blackish edges with just the slightest sign of age. The nose began as as habit to say 'old wine', which anyone who knows me, knows I’m not thrilled. But then this did an amazing transformation within 30 minutes. It was super pure and elegant and a truly memorable bottle of 14 year old cab.Admirable amounts of fruits: black currants, black cherry cola with some kirsch royal and a touch of crème de cassis. There was a touch of cedar, and tobacco notes with some tat and soy. Everything was hitting at all the right levels. A 45 second finish. Glad we did not judge this on first impressions. 93/100 myRating 4/5

Rockledge Cabernet Sauvignon The Rocks 2004 (SnoothRank: 4/5)
USA , California, Napa, St. Helena (March 2009)
Pitch black and brooding color with purple/magenta tinged edges. The nose is all black fruits. Nice. The palate reveals some sweet black fruits of cassis, black cherries wit some cola and dusty chewy tannins. A wonderfully balanced cab with lots of full fledged cab stuffing. Very full bodied and plush mouths feel, this had a long elegant finish. Very nice wine albeit slightly four square and a bit clumsy this time around the edges. A few years will tame but surely enjoyable now.

I look forward to meeting the winemaker Mike Hirby when he visits and has dinner with my tasting group CLONYC later this year. myRating 3.5/5

OK, ready? Here's my cab notes from the Napa Valley Vintners tasting in NYC last week:

Franciscan Magnificant 2005
http://www.snooth.com/wine/francisc...
"Very thick, viscous and soft wine - a real beauty. Plums dominate, but it really was the rich silky nature that caught my attention."
5/5

La Jota Cabernet Sauvignon Anniversary Release 2003
http://www.snooth.com/wine/la-jota-...
"Extremely rich, well balanced wine - full of cherry flavors with spiced fruit cake notes. Soft and supple with a mineral mid palette. Very nice finish."
5/5

La Jota Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain Selection 2003
http://www.snooth.com/wine/la-jota-...
"Second bottle was much better - Solid tannins, rich fruits (a real crumbly baked pie flavor) with a solid finish."
3.5 / 5

Atalon Cabernet Sauvignon 2003
http://www.snooth.com/wine/atalon-c...
"Nice structure, which slightly overwhelms the fruit. The wine is still very rich and some sweet fruit shines through (blackberries). Nice mineral finish."
3.5 / 5

Signorello Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2005
http://www.snooth.com/wine/signorel...
"With harvests of just 2.5 tonnes per acre - very low yields - this wine is very concentrated. Very mineral on the nose, leading to a lot of black fruit with great concentration. There's a touch of minerality throughout and some nice eucalyptus and mint. Lots of tannins on the finish. A great well priced wine."
4.5 / 5

Howell at the Moon - Cabernet Sauvignon 2005
http://www.snooth.com/wine/howell-m...
"Very thick, luxurious 100% cabernet wine. There's a huge amount of fruit, and less of the typical minty / menthol notes that many napa cabs have. A very soft wine with lower tannins. Very smooth, balanced and very mineral. Clearly mountain fruit."
4 /5

Franciscan Stylus Cabernet Sauvignon 2005
http://www.snooth.com/wine/francisc...
"A lot of acid on the start, coming off a little prickly. This was quickly replaced by an extreme burst of black currants. A rich fruity wine overall and smooth through the mid and after palate. Still needs to age."
4/5

Stag's Leap Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2004
http://www.snooth.com/wine/stags-le...
"Rich, viscous, thick fruity wine dripping with flavors of baked fruits - plums and black cherries - the flavor lingers and mellows to a spicy finish with notes redolent of pine cones. Will age, and is still a little tight on the finish."
4.5 / 5

Cliff Lede Stag's Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon 2006
http://www.snooth.com/wine/cliff-le...
"The nose is a little too subdued, but in the mouth there's an explosion of eucalyptus, tar and toffee. Lighter than many Napa cab's, this wine is still very rich and fruity and then finishes on licorice, with more toffee."
3.5 / 5

Faust Cabernet Sauvignon 2005
http://www.snooth.com/wine/faust-ca...
"The rich nose grabs you at the outset. Smoother and more mineral than many cabs. Blackberries are the dominant fruit, but the balance with the minerality was the main draw for me."
4.5 / 5

Silver Oak Cabernet Alexander Valley 2004
http://www.snooth.com/wine/2004-sil...
"Rich chocolate nose with hints of mocha. Very balanced and smooth. Lower acid than other Napa Cabs, very good fruit. Will clearly age. Finish is on spearmint. Very nice."
4.5 / 5

Clos Du Val Cabernet Sauvignon 2005
http://www.snooth.com/wine/clos-du-...
"Lots of eucalyptus and menthol to start, this is some real solid Napa Cab. Lots of minerality and menthol to play counterpoint to the rich fruitiness. There's great fruit - plums, figs and blackcurrent which leads to tobacco notes. The finish is still tight and the wine will age over time."

-----

Thats 2 5's - and I've given less than 10 5's out of over 1,200 wines. My best value pick was Signorello Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 - which at $50 was as good as many of the $80 wines.

My wine of the event was the Blackbird, but thats mainly merlot, so I'll move on, given the title of this thread...

And the final score is for?

Are you rating your posts now!

Those La Jotas have consistently been some lovely wines. Exceptionally ageworthy as well, for folks who like that kind of thing.
