- Post your Cabernet GTi notes here.
Adios Tempranillo, Hello Cabernet!
GTi makes the switch to Cabs and wait till you see what we'll be tasting this Thursday. A vertical of Gundlach Bundschu to commemorate their 150th anniversary! There will be a poetry slam sponsored by the winery all day on Thursday, 151 words or less on why wine moves you, and we'll be tasting along with the winemaker from 7 to 8 pm. That's this Thursday March 12th.
But don't let that prevent you from posting your notes about Cabernets near and far on this GTi thread.
I'll be back soon to start us off with a doozy!

May I jump in? :)
2005 Burgess Cabernet Sauvignon- Great structure and showful, this has the crème de cassis and kirsch notes I enjoy with a full mouth feel that is plush, elegant and abrupt all at the same time. A great value in today’s world of runaway pricing. 93/100

2005 Frank Family Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve- One of the days highlights: Big and bold but stylish and classy. Dark crème de cassis notes with an ultra pure and showy style. The tannins are complex, this is a beautifully balance wine. I like showy. 93/100

Those Frank Family wines do indeed have wonderful balance. http://www.snooth.com/wine/frank-family-vineyards-cabernet-sauvignon-2005/ I rated the regular bottling a 92!

1995 Burgess Cabernet Sauvignon Library Selection- Fully matured with some bricking of the edges, this has some great aged cab notes of cassis, soy sauce, some earthiness, and a good dimension of red fruits throughout. Very admirable. 90/100

Here we go, new GTI!
Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five 2006
http://www.snooth.com/wine/shafer-cabernet-sauvignon-one-point-five-2006/
Red fruit, spice, cassis, very ripe, creamy aromas. Flavors are slightly tart, very smooth, lilting, morphing, well oaked, bright on the attack but mellowing out as it's held in the mouth. Wonderful smooth tannins, but oh so closed right now. Lay it right down.
Tasted at the Napa Valley Vintners tasting earlier this week.

Well good luck finding this!

I was lucky to have been in to wine in the early 80's when this was re-released and even luckier to have recently purchased a small cache of this remarkable oddity.
This is actually a wine made by Samuele Sebastiani, the founder of the eponymous Winery, though it was bottled by his son August several years after Samuele's passing.I will be featuring this in an upcoming blog post so I can't give away the whole story here but suffice it to say this piece of history is alive and kicking.
Perhaps this was never a great wine but it has aged extremely well and is still chewy and fruity. Over the course of several hours a touch of mustiness blew off and was replaced with some cardamom and cinnamon which just framed the red cherry fruit perfectly. If you ever happen apon a bottle be prepared for a treat!
The best thing about it is the back label with it's admonishment to "drink this wine well chilled"!

Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five 2006 (SnoothRank: 4/5)
(March 2009)
Big bold and showy style of rough and ready cabernet. Dense black currant with some camphor and tar. Some slight vanilla notes. Big chewy but sophisticated tannins with a nice balance throughout. I like the turn these have made with the re-branding of One Point Five. 91/100 myRating 4/5
