Petite Sirah - HELP! Need appetizer or dish for wine tasting tonight...

Posted by GrumpyBAT, Mar 11, 2011.

Wine tasting event with friends this evening - just received our assignment this morning: Petite Sirah.

We know we need something bold and rich, preferably meaty.  Any suggestions for something that will be a big, unique hit with the Petite Sirah without having us running all around town for odd ingredients and won't require spending 3 hours in the kitchen?

Something grilled or barbequed.  I'd also suggest braised, but that'll be "three hours in the kitchen".

My brain keeps coming up with coffee dusted flank steak, grilled, with a blueberry/PS demi.

I like things kind of fatty with my PS--we drink it with strongly flavored lamb chops because the PS peels the fat off your teeth after.  But GDD's pairing sounds good to me because the tannins and fruit balance sounds good.  PS needs food that can stand up to its power, no doubt.  But when it's good, it highlights some of my favorite things about red wine and worth the effort.

Love the coffee-dusting, blueberry demi idea and will give that a go when I have a bit more time.  Since we are so short of time, we cheated.  Went up to my favorite BBQ place (Lazy Bones Smokehouse) and had them thick slice a pound of their awesome brisket.  Drizzling a small chunk of that with a smaller amount of Lazy Bones mild candy apple BBQ sauce over a piece of sharp, white, New Zealand grass-fed cheddar, all on top of a piece of toasted flat bread.  The Petite Sirah is the last out of ten pairings tonight, so these should hold up well in the warming oven until that comes up.  Just in case, we're also preparing a dark chocolate/cayenne pepper mousse with a fresh raspberry on each.  We'll see...

I'd skip the cheese myself.  I also will drink PS after dinner (but not with dessert or if I've had dessert) because it stands on its own and its usually a bad idea to have anything else after it except maybe coffee.
