Pairing with food, determined by region, varietal, or type?

Posted by slanza95, Oct 7, 2010.

I'm new to wine and I have compiled a list of ones to try.  I was wondering, which category would you look into while determining what food to pair it with?

It seems like "white wine with seafood and poultry" and "red wine with meat and game" isn't really a standard rule.

There's so many different varieties made in different regions, I don't know where to begin!

Help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Slanza and welcome to Snooth!

That old adage red with meat white with fish is a pretty reliable rule actually, The problem with it is that it's an old rule and people love to be rebels and break the rules. Eventually everyone gets old and realises that for the most part white are best with fish and chicken and reds with meats. Go figure!

Anyway, this might be a helpful place to start.

What are some good websites for pairing food with other food. Like if i want to make sweet mashed potatoes, what would a chef serve with this.

Zenia,

This is a very good website for pairing food with wine, and you can also ask about combinations on the plate rather than a single dish.

HOWEVER, this is not a good site for advertising male size-enhancement scams. So STOP the spamming!

I just found out that I am going to the Disney Food and Wine Festival. Has anyone gone to this event, if so, what should I expect? Are there free samples of wine/food at each country? If not, how much money should I bring for the samples? I am a wine enthusiast, and really looking forward to tasting great wine. Thanks in advance!

Wine types can vary a great deal from the white to red wines and there are many varieties of grapes that are used to product today’s wines within the US and around the world some of the finest wines are usually labeled with the name of the grape variety that the wine is made from such as Chardonnay, etc. In Europe the type of wine is usually name after the region where the grapes are grown. Most Europeans have regulations that control where type of grape are only allowed to grown in certain areas and be labeling with that type of wine this is due to hundreds of years of quality control mostly. Also non-European countries develop their reputations from certain regions that specialize in certain types of grapes and wine from those grapes.
