Pago de Valdoneje Bierzo 2007

Posted by Philip James, Mar 26, 2009.
Details for Pago de Valdoneje Mencia

Mencia was a new grape for me (I'd actually not really heard of it) and it pushes my grape total past 120 finally...

I thought it was rather like Blaufrankish (pure, mineral, steely, crisp even)- is that common, or just this region, or just this wine?

Funny - I had a Mencia for the first time this week too. Jancis says that sometimes Cab Franc is also sometimes called Mencia (by mistake) in Galicia.

182 and counting... I was hoping to get to 200 before this Spring's WCC meetup... if it happens.

I hear the Cab Franc comparison a lot but only see a slight similarity. I can see the Blaufrankish as well. The Ribera Sacra makes the most amazing Mencia wines, even though Bierzo got all the press until recently. The 2007 from Vina do Burato was delicious

I expect this is one, small, region that will get some big press in 2009.
