Would go if I could...

Piedmont 1978:

An Epic Tasting

Friday, May 18th at

Del Posto, NYC

As time goes on, it becomes increasingly clear that 1978 was one of the monumental vintages in Piemontese history, at the same towering level as 1958, 1964 and 1971. And for drinking today at the peak of its glorious maturity, 1978 looms especially large.

The key to 1978's greatness and present perfection can be found in the year's tiny crop of small thick-skinned grapes. Winemakers always knew they'd made something special, but it was a secret that long eluded many consumers. First of all, the bottles were always hard to come by in this small-production year. And for many of the '78 Barolos, we had to wait up to two decades for the wines to shed their tannins and reveal their deeply concentrated fruit and infinite nuance.

On Friday night, May 18th, at Del Posto, we will explore this important vintage, matching Mark Ladner's superb cuisine with a stellar line-up of Barolos and Barbarescos, both famous and obscure. The expected line-up* (all from our usual impeccable sources) includes:

1978 Barolo
Bartolo Mascarello Barolo
Giuseppe Mascarello Barolo Villero
Brovia Barolo Rocche Riserva
Francesco Rinaldi Barolo Cannubbio Brunata
Oddero Barolo
Fontanafredda Barolo Vigna Gallaretto Riserva Speciale
Pio Cesare Barolo
Renato Ratti Barolo Marcenasco Conca
Scarpa Barolo Le Coste

1978 Barbaresco
Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Santo Stefano Riserva Speciale (Red Label)
Gaja Barbaresco
Francesco Rinaldi Barbaresco
Ceretto Barbaresco Bricco Asili
Franco-Fiorina Barbaresco Riserva Speciale

The cost of all of this, including a four-course tour de force dinner from one of New York's top kitchens, is just $545, including wine, tax and gratuity. But space is limited.

For reservations, call The Rare Wine Co. (800) 999-4342 or email us at sales@rarewineco.com.

Looks like a nice tasting. I'll actually be in Piedmont tasting the 2008s, so I can't make it, but then again I have quite a few of these wines so I can slap something similar together and share the wines with people that I like. Not that the people at this dinner aren't my regualr drinking buddies anyway but..

Glad to see someone responding to this. Was wondering if anyone on Snooth even liked these wines... ;-)

Yes, got this mailer. Would be tempting for me if it were in LA. Wonder if this is something Gret T would consider?

I imagine he's saving his bucks for that Petrus retrospective. Just think, by holding off on this one, he's saved 1/32 of the other's price!  ;-)

Yep I'm going to that Petrus thing instead!

That Italian thing would be a nice tasting but I think I'll have to pass.  And I don't have any of the wines - wish I did tho.
