Older California Caberent dinner- late April/early May?

Posted by Gregory Dal Piaz, Mar 31, 2009.

After the success of our last dinner, the OTBN extravaganza, there was a lot of talk regarding a repeat. Well I would like to suggest an older California tasting.

While I frequently have harsh words for many wines coming from the west coast these days a lot of very fine wine was produced there over the years and I have more than my fair share. If we can nail down an appropriate date and good crowd I am not averse to popping the corks on a few magnums such as the

1978 Beaulieu Claret 100% Napa Cab
1979 Rutherford Hill Napa Cab - Made my Jerry Luper in his heyday
1985 Charles Krug - An old school classic from one of my favorite vintages.

So just to get the ball rolling that's what I am thinking of.

How do dates look for folks? Sundays works for many of us? April 26th or May 3rd perhaps?

Someplace in New York City of course and I was very happy with our last visit to North Square so that would be my first choice.

So who's up for it?

I might be able to May 3rd. I have a big work trip the end of April that might bring me through New York on my way home.

Well let me know. Things are slowly coming together but it appears to be evenly split between the 2 weeks right now.

I recently donated a '79 Mayacamas, '81 Opus One and '82 Cakebread magnum (as well as '80 through '83 vertical of Chalone Pinot Noir Reserve) to an event here in Tokyo at the turn of the year. Am wishing now for a couple of reasons I'd held on to them! Would've been nice to compare the Mayacamas, particularly, with the Beaulieu and Rutherford Hill...

Wow, those are some nice wines, the Chalones and Mayacamas in particular. So how did they end up in your possession and make their way to Tokyo?

Picked them up from visits to the wineries back in the early and mid-80s, and brought them back as carry-on luggage. I like the Cakebread, too, and wish now I'd bought a lot more magnums back then. Opus One is commonly available in Japan through commercial routes, but the others are more difficult, and back vintages impossible.

I let myself be talked into donating to a worthwhile charity auction run through an embassy here in Tokyo.

The Mayacamas was something I was particularly curious about since it was my last bottle, I haven't had any for a long time, and my suspicions are that it only gets better with age. I've gone through a lot of Chalone from the '70s and '80s, since their take on California Chardonnay and Pinot Noir really opened my eyes back then.

Greg, I'm interested, but weekends with Fridays are never good. If you settle on a weeknight let me know....
Thanks.
North Square is a great choice

Let's see what we can do.

So far it's been very difficult to pick the right date.

Look out mid-May here we come.

Greg - depending on the weekend, I may be able to come as well. I realize trying to accomodate everyone's schedule is tough, though...
