NYC "old world" Cali Wine dinner Monday, September 20, 7:00 PM

Posted by Gregory Dal Piaz, Aug 25, 2010.

I just thought we should start a new thread for this, the older thread was a bit confusing with the date change and all.

Location: Sojourn Restaurant 244 E 79th. Between 2nd & 3rd. Great food, service, and setting. http://www.sojournrestaurant.com/

Date (tentative): Monday, September 20, 7:00 PM

Wines / Theme: One bottle per person (more if you feel the need) of fine California wine that displays an old world style, preferably with some age. Specifics and sub-themes to be determined by discussion here. The meaning of "old-world" is open to discussinon, but the essence of the concept is contained in the threads linked below.

Good idea Greg. I confirmed our venue last night, and they're looking forward to having us.

Perfect,

I'm letting the other thread go then, we'll be able to access it but this will be the only one stickied.

Welcome aboard Captain!

So any thoughts on wines yet?

I'm thinking of these two.

'91 Corley Family Jefferson Cuvee Napa Cab

'95 Laurel Glen Sonoma Cab

This is going to sneak up on us!

I'm going to the cellar the weekend before and can pick somethings up.

My inventory is less than accurate, one of the reasons I'm going out there, but it looks like I may be bringing a 94 Ridge monte Bello and something a bit older.

So are we ten? With just a little more than a week to go, I would like to confirm our number with Sojourn.

How about an '82 Cakebread magnum? Would bring it if I could make it, but am stock on this side of the pond....

I'm still in but my challenge is locating an old world style cali wine as I don't have any I would consider in that style.  Any recommendations on where I'd be able to purchase some older vintages in or around nyc?

I am in, I was planning on grabbing some wines from the cellar but won't be able to get there before Monday but I'll be packing some good vino anyway.

Here's a list of producers worth looking around for, not sure who might have any older vintages though.

Laurel Geln

Philip Togni

Mayacamas

Mondavi reserve

Mount Eden

Clos du Val

Renaissance

Corison

Chappelet

Ahlgren

Ridge

Smith Madrone

A couple of searches does return several from Greg's list, available from NY retailers. Worst case scenario, if some can't find older vintages, then maybe just one that is in an "old-world" style. I'd hate to lose anyone from the group.

So Greg, C. Krug and Montelena don't make the cut?

It would be great to get a head count so I can confirm with our venue. Can everyone check-in? Looking forward to this. My wines are ready and so am I!

Actually I'm bringing of bringing a C Krug, maybe 2 if I can find the other bottle and i should have included Montelena and Diamond Creek while I was at it, and I'm sure there are more I missed!

I am in.

Count me in as well as I should be able to find something that fits the bill and is red!

Its actually going to be just me, and not +1. I'm thinking of bringing a '00 Verite La Muse. Checks in at 13.9% and drinks like a Pomerol.

I met with Peter, the chef, this afternoon and he is developing our menu. Any thoughts / preferences on whether our last course should be cheese or dessert?

I prefer dessert because I might be the only wine drinker in the world that doesn't eat cheese!

hhhmmmmm... I vote for cheese.. I'll be bringing a 1996 Laurel Glen Cab... the only thing I'd like to add is I have food allergies to peanuts, corn and shrimp... yes corn! I know that's an odd.. hope I'm not too much of a PITA!  :-)

I'll tell Peter about the allergies, no prob.

Hmm...so far 50/50 on the dessert/cheese question. If we go in the sweet direction, I could bring a sauternes. I'm game for either.
