From the "Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then" file come my tasting notes from a LIOCO Lunch I was invited to today at Healdsburg SHED. Being a local has its advantages. You just have to take them when they come around.
 
 
 
I arrived at the Café and was promptly greeted by Hollie Schulze and Jennifer Derrick, both formerly of Copain. What a great start and it just got better from there. They started by pouring a Rosé of Carignane from Mendocino County while lunch was being set up and we mingled getting to know the rest of the participants.
2013 LIOCO 'Indica' Rosé of Carignane Mendocino County - Nose of strawberry, green tea and fresh baked meringue. Light strawberry, mineral edge, good supporting acid. 
 
 
Soon we sat down for lunch where they paired dishes to each wine.
2012 LIOCO Hanzell Chard Sonoma Valley - Lemon curd, straw, plush mouthfeel, tart, medium acid, nice minerality with soft tannins. Lovely wine. Iconic vineyard.
 
 
2012 LIOCO Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir Laguna - 30% WC Ripe juicy dark cherry, strawberry, med body, spice, a touch stemmy, chalk.
 
 
2012 LIOCO Anderson Valley Pinot Noir Klint Vineyard - AV nose, savory earthy, fresh strawberry, cherry and red plum. Light to med bodied. Very expressive.
 
 
A cheese plate was paired with the Carignane which came from a keg.
2012 LIOCO 'Sativa' Carignane Mendocino County - Cranberry color, rustic nose, bramble, red raspberry, cranberry, turning strawberry with bracing acidity, dusty, slightly grippy tannins. 
 
 
Really fun, spur of the moment event. Great to see Hollie and Jennifer and share in the great wines and delicious food with a fun group of people. SHED is now on my radar. Really tasty.
 
Oh, it hailed bit while we ate! Crazy weather day in Sonoma County.

How'd the chard pair with the salad?

You really do live in one of the earth's garden spots. I've known it for awhile, but still find myself stuck in cement canyons. While you get these lunches, mine today was an everything-for-$5 each (decent tapas and wine--Chilean chard and cab, the chard better than expected) special at a Japanese version of a French bistro. Not really the same, though we were happy enough in our deprived urban state....

Another job well done...I see this label around from time to time and NG is a fan of the Rose. The wines seem admirably low to moderate in alcohol for CA, and either those SV Pinot's are hard to find or not out yet.

DM, well maybe a little ;) The Chard and Salad were one with each other. Just a fantastic pairing. Hollie told me she has really been enjoying these lunches since the kitchen does such a great job pairing dishes to their wines. This was no exception.

DV, the Anderson Valley PN was my favorite of the two although the Laguna had a great ripeness to it without being overblown, heavy, cola or high alc. Their winemaker is John Raytek of Ceritas. The ownersare the  former wine buyer for Spago and the wine rep who used to sell him his wine.

JD, these are all being released next week. Order forms were on the table with lunch. The Hanzell and Klint were both $50, the Laguna &38, the Carignane $28 and the Rosé $18.

JD, LIOCO's been on the radar for a while, well before I went walkabout. Definitely careful about alcohol levels and other things.

OT, you're up early on a Saturday morning! 

Me, I'm just digesting a steak dinner with the rest of some good South African pinotage. It's heading towards midnight Saturday over here...

I grew up on avocado and grapefuit salad variations (commercial avocado orchards in the family, a few grapefruit trees around the edges). Assume there was someone in the kitchen with a light touch on the grapefruit. I'm currently on a chardonnay jag (a half dozen bottles in the past week). Would love to try that LIOCO, but forget about sourcing it over here.

I got a final answer on the Chinon and Bourgeouil sourcing in Tokyo conundrum; even Chinon has almost disappeared from the marketplace completely, forget about the other. 10 to 20 years  ago I could throw a frisbee in any direction and wing off several bottles of them. Too many American-style Chileans and the like pushing large portions of the fine wine lists into niches or even out of the marketplace entirely.

Their first vintage was 2004.

I'm up every morning by 5:30. The body clock just works that way these days.

They used a small sectioned pink grapefruit that was just right.

Jeez. Sonoma in the spring, with good wine. And good winemakers.

NG is actually a fan of almost all of LIOCO's wines.  I got the email for this lunch as well, but wasn't in the area.  But it was good to see it is an ongoing thing.

My fave LIOCO wine is the 2008 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. I still have one squirreled away.   I have not tasted the 2012 SC Laguna (shown in pix above).  I did taste the 2010 SC PN, which was partially sourced from hirsch vineyard, IIRC.  That was nice as well.  The only one I have tasted that was not to my liking was the 2008 Anderson Valley PN.  A bit overcooked for my taste.   I do like the Indica Roses as a rule, and did taste the 2013 with a friend.  The chards are usually fantastic, excellent acidity, nice bright lemon notes as a rule. 

Nice write-up and pictures, OT.  Hope the hail and torrential downpours we got yesterday put a dent in our drought situation.  Didn't watch the news, so I don't know if the Sierras got much snow.  I did read an article in the online Press Democrat (checking Sonoma weather for last week:-), that mentioned an area of Mendocino county where the growers (grapes and otherwise), were going to receive NO water, in order to save it for the homes.  Very sad.

I knew this thread would pull you out of hiding NG!

Sierra got a couple feet of new snow yesterday but the snowpack is only 19% of normal hydration. We'll have to deal with the cutbacks for the rest of the season.
