Introduce Yourself

Hi everyone!

I recently joined Snooth, and am very excited for the feedback/suggestions/etc. from an online wine community! I thought I would introduce myself to open the lines of communication and glean some expertise. I live in Chicago and usually drink fuller-bodied wines with my favorite being Red Zinfandel. I have recently explored Malbec's as well and always have a Cabernet on hand. Every Syrah I have had gives me heartburn for some reason, but I do enjoy Petite Syrah. Usually prefer chocolate or spicy versus fruity or earthy. I'm not a big white wine fan, but in the summer a nice dry Sauvignon Blanc is good--nothing too sweet and definitely not too oaky.

I know the Chicago wine scene pretty well in regards to stores and tastings, but I would love to get any feedback/suggestions to expand my knowledge and wine collection!

Thanks so much in advance!

Hi Rachel - welcome! I get heartburn a lot, generally an acidic wine on an empty stomach. Zin is often lower in acids so i can believe that you'd gravitate towards them. One suggestion is pretzels, bread or some other neutral substance to sponge up he stomach acids while you drink, the other, is to keep looking for low acid wines - most new world wines (australia specifically) should fit that bill

Hi Rachel. I'm assuming by your list that you're shopping in the $15 - $20 range? You can get malbec for less but not many cabs. But there's a world of wine in that range that's worth looking at and some for even less. You also apparently like some tannins. Maybe try a nero d'avola for example, or a new-world style pinot noir from CA. And of course, don't forget tempranillo! Something from the Ribera del Duero or Toro in Spain.

I would recommend Sonoma Cabs ... some from Alexander Valley are nice balanced without high acidity.

Hi Everyone...I am new to Snooth, as well - Hi Rachel - reds are a good choice since many white wines are high in acidity, especially those made from grapes that are grown in cooler climates. You may also want to avoid sweet wines, such as ice wine. The key is to find a wine with the right level of sweetness and acidity. This is something that I'm still trying to figure out.

"Every Syrah I have had gives me heartburn for some reason, but I do enjoy Petite Syrah."

That doesn't really sound right. What syrahs have you tried?

kgamgmt - I'm curious - why avoid sweet wines? One of the great summer wines is a chilled brachetto d'asti.
