Introduce Yourself

Just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Christina, I work at Handley Cellars in the Anderson Valley. I enjoy a wide variety of wines, but I really start to swoon over delicate and flavorful styles. You can't beat this area's dry Gewurtztraminer. If anyone would like some insider info on the region I've got advice on some great spots. And of course, come by the Handley Cellars tasting room and say hello!

Not only am I a wine/food lover, but I have a degree in Biology and research wildlife across the country. At the end of a long day surveying wildlife in the remote areas of this country, I sit down next to a campfire with a bottle of port and some dark chocolate...talk about a reward for a job well done!

Welcome, Christina, to Snooth.

Where are some places you particularly like, and can recommend for visitors to Mendocino and Sonoma? What wildlife species are you surveying, where? And what kind of port are you enjoying?

There are a number of places I would recommend for wine and just for plain enjoyment. For wine: you can find some of the best sparkling wine in the world, at Roederer Estate, wonderful dry Gewurtztraminer at Husch, Navarro and Handley Cellars, and world-class Pinot Noir at Goldeneye, Londer and Toulouse. The port I prefer can be found just South of Boonville at Meyer family cellars or pick up a bottle of 20 year old tawny Ramos Pinto at Roederer Estate's tasting room (the Roederer family owns Ramos Pinto) Beer drinkers too can find great micro brews at North Coast and Anderson Valley breweries.

If you enjoy the outdoors like I do, and want to see some awe-inspiring old growth redwoods, make a stop at Hendy or Montgomery Woods State Parks. A kayak trip up Big River can't be beat or stroll along MacKerricher State Park's coastal trail to watch the Harbor seals. I may sound like a travel agent here, but I'm an average 25 year-old who grew up in Chicago. These are spots I regularly visit and love.

As for my own wildlife work in the area I have surveyed for spotted owls in the forests throughout the county. It's tricky work as you are often exploring forest roads in the middle of the night, but rewarding if you find a pair of successful owls parents and their new fledglings. Normally, I am a reptile specialist and have tracked turtles, lizards and snakes in Illinois, Texas and Utah.

I've got to include Navarro, Handley and Old Growth Redwoods on my next visit to California.

So many things to do, so little time.

Thanks for your run down, it great to get these first hand recommendations.

Cigarman168 You should be able to find Gewurz. anywhere. If not Anderson Valley Gewurz, certainly Alastian Gewurz. Trimbach, for example is widely distributed and I would be very surprised if it were not available in Hong Kong. American Gewurz, of which there are quite a few, may be less available.

Cigarman, look for Gewurtztraminer from Alsace in France. Many people think that's the best, though California's been trying to catch up for the last 20 years or more. Hugel and Trimbach are well known labels.
