I really like the new additions to the search, it looks and works great. One suggestion, make the price indicators logarithmic (or just spread out the lower end a bit more) so it's easier to specify price ranges in the lower end. I think people will care more about the difference between a $10 to $20 than a $230 to $240 and it's currently challenging to get the knob in precisely the correct place at that range.

So, I was just entering some reviews of some less expensive wines, and I noticed that -- even in my price range -- a search shows several vintages. I wonder if there was a way to carry over ratings from vintage to vintage...

While there will be differences of quality between the vintages, I think it will be 1) more pronounced in the higher end wines and 2) if I hated the 2005 vintage of a particular wine, I assume that the 2006 vintage will not be something I would consider...

Perhaps you've already considered this for the Snooth Rank, but a link to"See review of other vintages" or "average rating of all recent vintages" (go back 5?? years) could preserve customer recognition of greatness or mediocrity of the particular brand.

Andrew - i just want to make sure i understand what youre saying here..

is it that, for example, opus one 99 / 00 / 01 / 02 etc, should all be linked together? so that if you get to opus one 2007 and there's no ratings, you can at least see the ratings history?

or, that because YOU rated the 99 a 4*, we should give the other vintages 4* too?

the first one is something we'd love to do, and we will eventually, but we need a database that cleaner than a baby's bottom first (or is that smoother?). whatever...clean.

let me know

The second point you brought up (showing the ratings from previous years) is most important so that even if a wine doesn't have any ratings (or only one rating) viewers could easily see what was said about previous vintages.

I envisioned the carryover ratings from vintage to vintage would serve to highlight a producer's overall quality... so if 50 people gave the 2004 vintage of Wine-X a 5* rating, and the 2005 Wine-X has 1 rating of 2*, then I think it would be unfortunate if the 2005 is never recommended... Especially if it's compared to Wine-Y where the 2004 has 50 ratings of 1* and the 2005 has 1 review of 4*.

If I knew the above info, and hadn't tasted the 2005's, and someone asked me to recommend one of the 2005 wines, I would choose Wine-X, given the history of previous vintage. Obviously, there will be variations in quality from year to year, but unless the 2005 gets more negative reviews, I don't think it should be labeled as not worth trying.

So - I'm not sure if there is a practical way to address that with a database at the size you are dealing with (other than displaying the ratings history), but it was something I thought about last night

Cheers and happy 4th!

yeah, Rodolphe asked for something similar. its a bit of the holy grail, but maybe in 6 months the db would be clean enough for something like that. its on the long term list!

Simply showing how *I* rated other vintages of the same wine would be great, and including SnoothRank / reviews of other years too.

I assume Ro gave you the same example he gave me this past weekend: professional reviewers don't necessarily get to every vintage of a wine, but they've got a wider experience and know how to express themselves more clearly than I do, so I'd like to "compare reviews of other vintages" or something like that. Maybe a button next to the "suggest another vintage"?

gr - its on the list. however, i dont think the DB is clean enough YET for us to programatically relate vintages together. We could do it by winery easily enough, but thats not so helpful...

Actually, I think even winery would be useful.

Given that I can't usefully order online in PA, I've dumped my Snooth list onto my iPod and gone both to the state stores and to Delaware (shh, don't tell the taxman). I found maybe 1 of the 40 recs exactly, several with another vintage, and many from the same winery. It'd be nice to get a feel for whether other wines from the same winery are good, whether 1997 was just a really good year for ALL of their wines, things like that.

I figure this is pretty far down the list, and that's fine, but it would be separately useful to compare other wines, same winery, various vintages as well.
