Need restaurant tips in Santa Barbara and Ojai, LA

Posted by Erica Landin, Jan 16, 2013.

Heading to LA tomorrow and will spend three days visiting vineyards and doing interviews. If anyone has good restaurant tips in that area, I'd love an insight!

Hey Erica, welcome to LA - where are you staying, and do you have a car? Downtown there are some world famous sandwich shops, phillipe's (lamb, beef, etc french dip - you can even get a good glass of wine) and langer's (pastrami) are a couple of the most popular. If you want a sit down dining experience it can get pricey for the famous places, like Michael's in Santa Monica or Cut by Wolfgang Puck. I haven't found many places inbetween, though the Lazy Ox is pretty wine-centric and affordable. Foxall and I ate there when he was in town.

Ojai is easy, there is hardly anything in town but the Ojai valley in and Spa has a crazy good restaurant and bar in the back by one of the golf course putting greens. The place is huge, so when you pull in try to keep driving around the back until you see or go past the main golf course practice range. I'm forgetting the exact name of it, but it's dark in there, old fashioned and the bar is a big part of it so make sure there is one or you're in the wrong place!

Santa Barbara I'd recommend asking the locals, the food is always hit or miss. If you like that movie Sideways, the restaurant they filmed at is called the Hitching Post in Buellton and I've had good meals there, plus they have a good central coast themed wine list that won't break the bank.

Dmcker used to always tell me to go to Jocko's in Nipomo... I never made it, as I am always traveling down on Easter, and it's closed then.  I hear they have awesome santa maria tri tip...

Thanks guys! I actually ended up at OBC Ojai, a wine shop with a restaurant. The food was only ok but they had no corkage for wines bought in store. Really nice way to sample some nice bottles at a great price.

Oh and Jon - so sorry I didn't get to see you when I was out there, it got pretty busy on Thursday/Friday and I know you were busy on Saturday. Thanks for the tips and hope to meet next time!

No worry Erica, I was once a bit of a jet-setter myself. We'll try again next time, safe travels.
