- Madeira Wine Faults?
OK, so I got me a bottle of Justino's Sercial 10 yr old Madeira. Before I opened it i noticed that it seemed very cloudy but checked a few other bottles and all seemed the same. It's Madeira I thought like this wine has been cooked already what or how can this possibly be faulted.
It was cloudy amber/orange color. A delicate nose of walnuts and buttered brussel sprouts. The palate was fresh and clean with citrus, honey and nutty subtleties. I thought it tasted just fine.
SO I guess what I'm asking is, is it typical of Madeira to be cloudy? I've had a few and never really paid attention or don't recall them being cloudy. Should I finish this bottle? I've only had about half a glass. And if this is a bad bottle, how?

That's weird Leo,
Does it settle out or does the wine remain cloudy?

it remains cloudy. Actually before i opened it and was looking at the other bottles it seemed to have seperated. I shook/mixed it up a bit before opening and them realized how cloudy it was.Do you want your own cloudy Madeira bottle to study?

Leo, you say "Before I opened it i noticed that it seemed very cloudy but checked a few other bottles and all seemed the same" Were those other bottles in the store? or in your house?
I've had some experiences before with cloudy Madeira. It seems to really affect Sercial (and to a lesser extent Verdelho & Terrantez). The wines can get really cloudy if they were recently transported. You mention shaking the bottle, but I wonder if these bottles were transported recently before they got to you. Maybe the store just got them?
It is also rare that a relatively young wine like the Justino's 10 would have this. Do you have any idea if this is a 10 year that was bottled in 2008 or 1988? Winemaking on Madeira is certainly anachronistic so maybe they aren't fining as much as we think they are!
Is it settling?

The bottles where in the store. I looked at dates on them and two of them showed March 2003< so i'm guessing that is when it was bottled. I know for sure they were not recently transported. These bottles where probably sitting on the shelf for years. I'll check again later today if they settled, they are at my job.
