Low Alcohol Wines

Posted by shornig, Feb 13, 2014.

Hi, does anyone out there know of low alcohol (7-12% ABV) red wines? Any you recommend?

Lambrusco pops into my head. Light, semi sweet and bubbly; it's also widely available.

Anything under 10-1/2% and you are wasting your money thinking it is wine. Just my opinion. Had a nice RYME Cellars Vermentino "Hers" last week that came in at 11.2% which was pushing the envelope but that's about as low as I would go. Otherwise the wine loses texture and a lot of it's personality and becomes  too green. I mean that Vermentino had to be picked under 20 brix to get to 11.2 abv. imagine puttingan unripe   grape in your mouth and chewing on it. At 20 brix it is unripe. Guess what it would taste like at 18-19? The wine would taste like grapefruit rind.

Lambrusco or sweet wines/sparklers is a different story. You can stop fermentation at a certain alc level and have a sweet wine but my answer was for a dry wine.

I wouldn't go for a sparkling red if you have a general audience with a lot of people who aren't really wine drinkers. I love lambrusco but I think it might be a turn off for some.

I tried Cantamezza (AKA La Spigliata)  and it is my go to for red wine.  I'm fairly new to drinking wine and it was delicious!!

You might try Roscato Rosso Dolce which is available by the glass at Olive Garden to try before you buy. There was a discussion on this forum about it. See the link below.
