Looking for suggestions

Posted by clennox, Feb 3, 2010.

I've just become interested in wine recently and still trying to figure out my palate. Any suggestions for something fairly inexpensive (under $10 or $15) and maybe a couple in the $25-$30 range? I've been told I have fairly mature taste for a newbie. I enjoy cabernet sauvignon and merlot, a thicker richer wine. Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi Clen, welcome. I don't know who told you about mature taste but I really don't know what that means and I don't think there is any such thing, unless they were referring to the gradual fading of our senses as we age. But I don't think that's what they meant!

Anyhow, if you like cab and merlot, why not try some at that range? That's actually a pretty good range for them from CA, from Australia, and elsewhere.

Here's a thread that Greg DP started w plenty of good value recs, and your range is high enough that you should be able to find some sensational wines. In France, for example, some of the Bordeaux are available, and definitely a lot in the Rhone - Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Ventoux, Luberon and other regions, as well as St Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage. Not to mention plenty from the Languedoc. Most of those aren't cab or merlot though, although they're great in many cases.

In CA, there are plenty and there was a thread about that somewhere on Snooth. But if you look up in WA, there's plenty. It tasted a few dozen WA wines yesterday and they're just great. Cadence, Buty, Andrew Will, Woodward Canyon, Betz, Dunham, and Hedges are just a few that come to mind but there really are plenty.

Have you looked at Meritage wines.
Snooth has some that are reasonable.
Would you like to check them out?
