Long Island wineries

Posted by Philip James, Oct 15, 2008.

Mark and I are off to Lenn Thompson's event this sunday (its for charity!): http://lennthompson.typepad.com/len...

We thought we'd take in another winery or two while we were there. Any recommendations?

I've been to all the ones near Sag Harbor / South fork, but have never been to the North Fork. I just sent an email to Paumanok (they came up near the top of Snooth when i did some searching). any other recommendations?

Thanks

I'm a fan of Paumanok's wines. Hope we get to take the tour there.

Oh yeah, they got back to us. Confirmed! They said they'd do a proper tour, then we've time to eat, pound some samples at one other place before we get to Lenn's event.

I agree Paumonok is excellent try the great 2007 whites, a great vintage overall. If they have any 2004 Assemblage it is an awesome red and the 2007 Rieslings esp semidry and dessert are great. Look for Karen the sales manager, she's a real cutey

My personal favorites also include Jamesport, warm cozy tasting room and good restaurants nearby
Jedidiah Hawkins House, and the Jamesport country kitchen. Osprey's dominion has a great reserve merlot, nice tasting room and a killer brut rose champagne.

Paumanok was the only winery that really turned my head when I was out there last. Their Rieslings are beautiful wines.

Rich - will be on the lookout for those wines as well as Karen, although i do believe she's the owners daughter or something...

Thanks for the other tips

I'll write a blog post about the trip this afternoon, but I wanted to post a quick video: showing barrel fermented chardonnay actually bubbling away (carbon dioxide) as the wine ferments. It was pretty cool to see (youtube is still processing the file, it'll be done in a few minutes):

Philip and Mark...great meeting you guys yesterday. And if I had been diligent enough to see this before you came out, Paumanok is where I would have suggested...so that worked out well.

If you guys want to come out again sometime (maybe post harvest when it's a little less crazy out here) I'd be happy to take you around to my favorite spots.

Lenn -- good meeting you as well. I was impressed with the wines I tasted, and the countryside was definitely worth the trip. (Lots of pumpkins this time of year!)

We'd be glad to come out for another trip. Thanks for the offer!

Two wine reviews Lenn! You just doubled your Snooth total! ;)

Thanks for stopping by - am looking forward to tasting more wines with you next week at the bloggers conference
