Lake Chelan Wineries

Original post by Lucha Vino, Jul 31, 2010.

I'm heading to Lake Chelan for some bike riding and wine drinking next weekend.  Does anybody out there in Snooth Land have recommendations for wineries to visit?

Cheers!

Thanks, Vello. Did you not like the cab franc? And why, if you go to the trouble to go all the way out there, isn't it possible to taste all their wines, or at least more than three?

HI D,

Good question.

Karen explained that their strategy for these one off tastings is to open one bottle of the taster's choice and then additional bottles that you would be charged 1/2 price and can take the bottle with you.  She said that they do not provide all 5 of their wines for a single tasting.  I suppose you could request that, especially if you were paying the 1/2 price per bottle.

We chose to take the Cab Franc with us and that was the only "extra" bottle that we had to pay for (at 1/2 price) from the tasting.

The Cab Franc was very good.  My tasting notes were:

Nose of creamy raspberry and spice with some hints of currants and clove.  The palate was the same with a bit of graham cracker on the finish.

Intresting tasting policy, but then again I imagine it takes thought to work out what works when you're hardly in an area with a lot of foot traffic through the tasting doors.

Any notes for the others?

Here are a few more.  The tastings seemed to be such a whirlwind that I did not take any notes.  When things were a bit slower I was able to right some things down.  As I reflected on our weekend I realized that I felt somewhat rushed through the tastings and was too self conscious to pull out my iPhone and make some notes.  Next time...

vin du lac Pinot Noir - Nose of light smoke and strawberry that lead to a palate of light red fruit, strawberries and white pepper with a slightly dry and sweet finish.

vin du lac Cuvee Rouge - Nose of smoked meat, spice and dark berries with a palate of cranberry, pie cherry and cedar.  The finish was tart and then faded to notes of creamy red berry.

Nefarious 2008 Estate Syrah - Deep purple in color with a nose of black fruit, blue berry, earth and cracked pepper.  The palate was really big dark berries and strong pepper overtones.

On a general note, most of the Merlots we tasted all had an interesting chocolate, cocoa and spice character that I finally connected with mole'.

How about the other Fielding Hills varietals?

Interesting that you've identified the 'terroir' of Central Washington merlot with mole sauce! Green or brown or... ;-)

Definitely brown on the Mole' :-)

I can't really do the Cab Sauv or Merlot justice with my memory providing the tasting notes, but I will give it a try.

I would give them both a 4 bottle rating and say they are great representatives of the varietals - big and bold.  Here is what I can remember... Their Merlot had the mole' character on the nose and palate with notes of dark berries.  The Cabernet Sauvignon had a nose of dark pie cherry, currant and spice with a similar palate.  We really like both of these varietals and bought a bottle of each.  I will post tasting notes when we open those bottles!

Cheers

Great reports on the wineries, V.  I hope to get down to the lake sometime during the next 10 days.  If I do, I shall post some tastings, no doubt.

As to sports cars, I was (of course) only funning; any car with some handling capability would do splendidly on these roads - if memory serves.  But then sitting in the back of the pickup might work too - if you have some beer to cut the dust while hoping for an elk to make an appearance.

;-)
