- Know anything about these wines?
Okay, i have sitting here on my rack some sweet wines and ports (love them), but i was hoping to find some feedback on them if any of you have had them, or maybe how long you can keep them. i know you can keep sweet wines and ports for a long while, but how long is long? lol
i've also included the other wines that i've been holding for a special occassion or a grand drinking night, but ost aren't anything special or expensive, these are just the one's i've tried not touching because i thought they might taste better a year or three from now.

Ok, I'll give this a try.
1) Tirecul La Graviere Les Pins 2003 Monbazillac Appellation FR
A very nice dessert wine drinking well now and with years to go though i would opt drinking it sometime over the next 5 years or so while it's fruit is still fresh
2) Isabel Nobel Sauvage 2002 Marlborough, NZ
I'm not familiar with this wine so someone else will hopefully chime in.
3) Dashe Late Harvest Zinfandel 2007 Dry Creek Valley, CA
One of the great Zin producers out there today. I haven't had the 07 but his late harvest Zins have an excellent track record. In general late harvest zins seem to be steady state wines so this should be fine for a decade or two.
4) Kistler Sonoma Coast 'Les Noisetiers' 2004 Chardonnay
Not my kind of wine but very well thought of and with a track record for ageing.
5) Cappella Sant'Andrea Vendemmia 2004 Rialto Vernaccia di San Gimignano (italy)
Drink this sooner rather than later though with prpoer cellaring it can go another 3-5 years I just don't see a reason to wait.
6)Blanck Gewurztraminer Veilles Vignes, Alsace Grand Cru 2001 Furstentum (france
I enjoy my Gewurtz on the young side and while this is one of the best that still holds. I would opt for drinking this over the next 2-3 years.
7) Dow's 1985 Vintage Porto
One of the better wines of a vintage they never lived up to it's reputation. Lots of wines are marred by excess volatile acidity. this is best the day after right now so if you plan on serving this soon give it a 24 hour decant. otherwise waiting 10 plus years seems in order.
8) W&J Graham's 20Yr Tawny Porto
Enjoy it now. there is really no upside to holding tawnies and while they remain healthy for a long time they were bottled to be consumed in the short term.
9) Osborne Porto 10Yr Tawny
Ditto
10) Albano Armani Foja Tonda 2004, Italy
Foja tonda makes for a big wine that is like an extracted blend of merlot and dolcetto. it has a lovely story as a rescued grape of Trentino but has only been commercially bottled for about 15 years. It seems to have the ability to improve for a decade or so so yours is still a baby.
11) Francois Chidaine 'Clos Habert' Montlouis Sur loire 2006
This will live forever. Well not really but damn close. It has a hint of sweetness which will fade with time but Chenin blanc has an uncanny knack for staying alive.
Well that's about all i got right now.

Okay i have another question. i know ports and sweets and big tannic wines can last for years and decades, however, how exactly do you figure out how long one type of wine can last? how do you decide on 3-5 yrs as opposed to 10-12 or 2? Is it the record, (the filing of tests done over the years?), as you mentioned before?

The only ones I can comment on are:
3) Dashe Late Harvest Zinfandel 2007 Dry Creek Valley, CA
- I think Dashe is a great smaller producer and they have consistency I like. They strive for balance in their wines which I appreciate. There late harvest zin's are not overly sweet and usually very well balanced. 07 was good for Sonoma County so this should be very good.
4) Kistler Sonoma Coast 'Les Noisetiers' 2004 Chardonnay
I haven't had this wine but Kistler is a well respected producer. As Greg has mentioned they are known to age well. Once again 04 was a good year for Sonoma and specfically for Chardonnay.
<note: my comments on the years are from two sources ... Wine Spectator vintage charts and comments made by the wine maker I work with>

Kistler, Had this one...very nice, big, buttery, very elegant, light oak. I consider it a very classy chardonnay!

Guess drinking windows, that's ultimately what it is, is simply using my experience with the wine in question, other wines from that producer, other producer's wines from that vintage, aged wines from previous vintages of that style and any other tidbit's of info I can glean from my memory to form a reasonable path that this wine in particular will take while ageing.

Chiming in on 2)
I believe Isabel Noble Sauvage is a sweet wine made from Botrytised (Noble Rot) Sauvignon Blanc. It should certainly be good for the next 2-3 years, but I don't know if it has enough acidity to be virtually immortal like some other sweet wines.

This also might help regarding the Noble Sauvage which is only ever made in conditions that allow for this particular wine http://www.isabelestate.com/downloads/07_harvest_newsletter.pdf
