Jam Jar Sweet Shiraz

This wine was a little too sweet even for me. It did have a great fruity flavor though. Being a novice, I wonder if anyone can recommend a red that is full flavored yet somewhat sweet.

If you like fizz, try some sparkling shiraz from Oz, or some Lambrusco from Italy....

Since the winewriters of America (as opposed to the people who actually drink the stuff without paying too much attention to the attitudes of the former group) tend to turn up their noses at sparkling reds, those shirazes from Oz aren't all that easy to find in the US. An old monstrosity from decades past called 'Cold Duck' (I can clearly remember how jazzed I was at being able to sneak coupe-style glasses of the stuff from a punchbowl at my aunt's engagement party when I was 14 or 15; it tasted a little more sophisticated to me at the time than the Coca Cola I often drank) called has tended to queer the pitch for the style. The fact that production volume is low for that style of wine in Oz, and demand is high domestically, also contributes to relatively low export volume. Nor are prices generally as low as some people might like.

Rockford Black is a bit pricey, if you can find it. Any opinions, Stephen, on Craneford Barossa Valley Sparkling Shiraz Petit Verdot,  Double Vision Mudgee Sparkling Shiraz, Fox Creek McLaren Vale Vixen, Galah South Australia Sparkling Red, Hardys Australia Sparkling Shiraz,  Joseph Adelaide Sparkling Red, Majella Coonawarra Sparkling Shiraz or Wild Duck Creek Estate Heathcote Sparkling Duck, all of which I've seen on the US market and tasted at one time or another.

The Fox Creek and Majella came across as the best among the lower-priced, while the Joseph Adelaide was quite good, even if a little pricier. The Wild Duck was heading towards Rockford territory pricewise but was complexly interesting. The Craneford was a fruit bomb, held somewhat in check only by the fizz. The Hardy's was too simple and too sweet.

Majella and Fox Creek are excellent red Sparkles Majella also do very good cabernet and Fox ck Shiraz at reasonable prices

Not tried Joseph but they do make reasonable wines with a more italian influence eg Amorone style

Craneford is only average

Galah and Hardy's are rubbish and unfortunately bring back memories of Kaiser Stuhl Cold Duck - Terrible, carbonated sugar infused grape juice with I suspect colour added artificially.

Agree as a teenager it was more fun than coke and much cheaper than any commercial spirit and coke

Wild Creek make some great wines from the Heathcote region and their sparkling is good but pricey

Rockford is the highwater benchmark for the style which is a great starter to a night but more than one glass I find a struggle.

The style is an interesting one and seems to find its supporters amongst females who do not drink red wine and men who like sparkling [coz beer has bubbles] but won't admit to drinking champagne

Most of my friends enjoy a glass as it is an interesting style and goes well with informal summer gatherings but only a glass

Thanks for the feedback, but actually I wasn't looking for a sparkling wine, just a semi-sweet, full-bodied red.

OP, what you're looking for doesn't really exist, at least in the US, where sweet red wines aren't remotely popular.

GDD, unless you want to classify casella yellowtail shiraz as sweet

Not a home product I enjoy at all but many of your country people are consuming it by the millions of cases per annum

Actually Mikejapan you could look at fortified shiraz which is often desribed as Port in Australia.  They are certainly sweet but very high alcohol 18+%

Yellowtail is garbage, as you know.  I wouldn't recommend it to my enemy, let alone anyone showing interest on a wine board.

Too true, but there is a lot of people in the US who keep encouraging them to make it.  I think it is now the highest selling 750ml bottled brand in the US.  Somewhere between 5-10m 9l cases per annum!!!

I won't drink it but it is sweet and sometimes we can only point people in a direction and let them make up their own mind

It is a bit like South Park, I love it my wife hates both with the same passion and despite much debate on morality and literary merit we can find no middle ground.  Democracy allows me to watch it on the basis of a 4-1 majority in our house and no Presidential veto

Semi-sweet reds, IMHO:  Orin Swift's Saldo Zin; Mollydooker Two Left Feet or Enchanted Path (depending on your price point); Levendi Sweetwater Ranch Cab.  Cheers!

To be my usual d.b. self, the wines listed above (unsure about the Sweetwater Ranch- I've never heard of it) are all dry.  The Mollydookers, for example, only have 3.3g RS, which is very dry.

Those wines are definitely fruity, which isn't the same thing.

Hmmm... it is difficult because I do not know what the OP really means by "sweet".  Most shiraz can be jammy, but not really sweet, unless it borders on a late harvest.

Totally reading between the lines, I would guess what OP is looking for is a fruity red that is not young and tannic.  I would recommend to try some CA zins, CA syrahs, CA petite syrahs... CA reds are meant to drink young are are somewhat "big".. OP may like that.

Safe bet?  Try Bogle Petite syrah, OP. and then let us know in this thread how that one was for you.  It is not my all time fav wine, but readily available and decent drinker.

 I tried the Bogle and didn't really care for it. I found a Shiraz from Lindemann and thought it was good and at 6.99 it was very reasonable. I think I'll stick with the Shiraz for awhile.

Honestly, try the Carlo Rossi. It's a mass-produced industrial wine, but has a very recognizable sweet edge to it. The price is pretty attractive, too. Depending on what your reaction is to that, we might be able to make better recommendations.

Try some Argentine Malbecs, California Cabernets/Zinfandel or South Australian Shiraz  $5-$15.
