iPhone Beta Feedback - Release 2.2.1

Posted by Chris Carpita, Jan 10, 2013.

Please reply to this post if you wish to leave specific feedback or general commentary.   Thanks!

We're currently closed for beta applicants, but if you reply below you can be at or near the top of the wait list - this unfortunate limit is imposed by Apple, which restricts us to 100 new beta devices per year.

Hello,

The maps are at least 4.5 years out of date - several closed or relocated wine shops are pulling up. (Sorry, I originally replied to the developer on this, my bad.) From what I can see, the purple pins show incomplete inventory, and the green pins are for the shops where inventory can be browsed. There are a couple on there that are still in business, but have purple pins. Is this because they don't share their inventory or information for apps?

Impressive number of wines, and I like that I can move the map and see more stores pop-up.

-Julia

Thanks Julia - I sent you a PM earlier after I saw the feedback on Test Flight.  Good points, we're in the process of improving the store data and will seek to allow feedback within the app to remove stores that are closed.

Great. I was just about to reply to your PM with some updated information for Eugene, Oregon. Would this be helpful?

The Broadway Wine Merchants (no longer on Broadway): 17 Oakway Center, Eugene, OR 97401

Julia's Flowers and Wine on 7th (sold in 2010 - became another name, then closed in 2012 - the map does not show the new name or newer locations, so this is how I determined the maps were at  least 4.5 yrs outdated)

Wine Styles - Eugene 189 - closed in '09

The Wine Merchants do business as Sundance Wine Cellars. Their address is correct, but the sign says Sundance

Purple Pins that have excellent inventory are: Marche Provisions, Long's Meat Market, Cornucopia.

Three great wine shops that didn't have pins are: Jiffy Market 3443 Hilyard St., Eugene 97405 / Authentica Wines 766 West Park St., Eugene, 97401 / Sixteen Tons Wine & Beer 265 East 13th Ave., Eugene, 97401.

Thanks Julia. I went ahead and removed the closed stores, moved locations for Broadway, and added the missing stores.

You are correct about the purple-pin stores: they do not share their inventory with us, and we'd love it if they did!  We're ramping up our direct communications with merchants in the next month to turn more of those green.    In the meantime, store owners can visit http://www.snooth.com/partners/ for details about providing us with their info, which we're really pushing for rather than doing it by the unreliable process of web crawling.

Would you like me to "put in a good word" or would you prefer that I leave all communication up to Snooth? E

Are you going to add wine bars too? We have a couple urban wine bars that have bottles to go. If so, here's two:

LaVelle Vineyards Tasting Room at the 5th: 295 E. 5th Ave. Ste 25, Eugene, 97401

Territorial Vineyards & Wine Company: 907 W. 3rd Ave., Eugene, 97402

A good word always helps :)

The Wine Bars is an interesting idea, but we'd need to build up a bigger collection of them first before we show filters for that in the map view.   Definitely will keep in mind

Hi Chris,

I also have some feedback regarding the store map.  If would be great if users had a way to easily provide updated information on stores.  For stores or wine bars that have closed, perhaps an option in the pin details for "Flag as No Longer in Business".  This would not remove it from view, but it would provide Snooth a lead to chase down and verify.  For new store locations, perhaps an option to geo-tag a location and then add any available detail such as name of the store, phone number, address, etc.

App looks and works great.

Craig

I just noticed Eugene Wine Cellars on there - they are actually a custom crush pad / winery. No wine is sold there.

I see a winery in Burien Washington that has been closed for a couple of years - E.B. Foote.  Also, I hardly ever get to see any stores that match search results.  Some times I see a message that says "No Nearby Stores" and other times I will get a list of stores that are all 2,000 miles away!

I would prefer to see the list of stores regardless of where they are located in relation to me.

Here in Utah we can only get wine from liquor store ran by the state, but your map only shows about 50% of the stores. Also the last 5 wines I tried to photo search did not come up, but they are in the system because they came up with a text search.

Last thing, just a couple ideas. Since you dont have an app for the android system (idea #1) i down loaded another wine app to my Samsung tablet that has photo search. If it doesnt come up on their system they actually have people that will search it for you, and send an email once they find it (idea #2)

@RockiesFan - great idea re: the e-mail (Idea #2).  That's what we're planning on with the next major release, expected in Mid-February.   I wish idea #1 were as easy to implement, but it's something we're planning on having ready by the summer.

I'm working now (and over the weekend) to bump our store counts, we should have some substantial improvements in the next couple of weeks.

I also just released a fix to our API that should expand the number of wines that display on wine search in the app.

Thanks everyone!

Ok, here are some minor thoughts from my more simplistic perspective (I am more the casual iphone user, not a super geek, I doubt I have more than 20 apps I've loaded on my phone!).  I actually did a review of a wine that I was drinking at a happy hour at the hotel and that worked quite well, but that was a simple one, as it was just a basic non-vintage merlot.  I did find the interface somewhat clunky when trying to get the right vintage (and I still can't find an option to add a missing vintage).

In other areas, I also tried to copy a wine review from by blog to the wine page, and although it took me a while, it seemed to work ok (this is probably me trying to work the copy/paste function in an apple product!), though I think it would be nice if there was some way to link a review directly to the blogger app, at least that would cut out my copy and pasting.

I haven't tried the "find a wine/store" part yet, but maybe next week.  The other items that I wasn't sure if they were supposed to be there or not, was the "Forum" as I would have liked to have typed this feedback fresh as I was trying it last Wednesday night, nor could I find the part of the site where I would normally send and receive private messages, as I think that could be quite useful given how many of us love to meet up for wine or meals when we travel.

Overall, I like it and can't wait to try the next round of upgrades!  Cheers!

I am getting inconsistent search results using different search features in the interface.

I search for Flying Trout from the search box and see two wines.  I choose the 2008 Torrontes.

On the detailed page the Other Vintages option then displays three vintages for the same wine.  Only one vintage was displayed on the original search results. I would expect all three vintages to be included on the first search.

Going back to the detail page I use the Winery option to see more wines from this Winery and get a display that includes 10 wines. I would expect the initial search results to show all 10 of the wines.

Going back to my original search results I choose the Flying Trout Lake Blend.  From the detailed page I use the Other Vintages option and all 10 wines are displayed.  I would expect that this would only include the Lake Blend and all the vintages in the Snooth database for this one wine.  Instead, all Flying Trout wines were displayed.

I see similar filtering behavior using Andrew Will Cabernet Sauvignon 2008.  Selecting Other Vintages from the details screen shows 72 wines.  It looks like any Andrew Will with "Cabernet Sauvignon" in the name is being included.

I selected a more specific wine from the list "Andrew Will Cabernet Sauvignon Klipsun Vineyard" and the same 72 wines are includes when I select Other Vintages from the details screen.  I would have expected these results to only include the Klipsun Cab.

Price filter in wine search doesn't seem to work. I chose $20-30 and I saw wines of every price point.

@Jtryka - thanks for the notes.  Our next major release should make it a lot easier to add your tasting notes, and also add in missing vintages.

Forum + private messages are something we're planning to add in future releases (though probably closer to the summer)

@Lucha - when I search "Flying Trout" (new search) I now get 10 wines.   I was trying to fix an API condition on Friday that ended up screwing up price search and affected @Jshimkin, but this should be resolved now.   Basically the app was calling our API in a way that limited the results, and I had to work around it in a roundabout fashion.

It does look like the "other vintages" function is just returning other closely matching wines.   I'm adding a fix to our list of todos.

KitFox Vineyards (Patterson CA), shows up in the app as a store with inventory (green pin, "Browse in stock wines" 116), but when you click in there is no inventory.

http://www.snooth.com/wines/winery/kitfox-vineyards-41779/#action=search&hide_state=2&country=US&entity=price&wineries[0]=41779&per_page=10

Same for Mario Perelli-Minetti Winery and Pena Ridge, to name a few nearby KitFox

Maybe, we're getting Wineries confused with retailers by assuming that they are selling the wines that are in their portfolio?

@Rich - will check into it.  Likely there are a few wineries marked as also selling wine on premises, and they should be left out of the app.

Maybe this has already been asked, but what about wine pairing suggestions. I love Gregs suggestions he puts on the web version, can you add a pairing section to the App? Lets make this app the one stop wine app
