Indian Vermouth?

Posted by richardbtchr, Nov 16, 2010.

Hi! We live in Auroville, which is near Pondicherry, TN, and are trying to find where we can purchase White Dry Vermouth. At this point, any brand will suffice, but if available, we would like to try something that came from India's own vinyards. Can anyone assist??! Richard and Clare

And why, exactly, vermouth from India? Just because of the town's name? What's wrong with the stuff from France or Italy?

France and especially Italy would be preferred, but, so far, I have found zip, zero, nada anywhere in Pondicherry or Chennai......

And you are not likely to find a vermouth from India.  Most of the better wine comes from North India or the Western Ghats in Maharashtra State (adjacent the Deccan Plain) where altitude makes wine grape cultivation an intriguing option to other cash crops.

But there is hope.  Indians are drinking wine in greater and greater numbers as the nation builds a foundation for a middle-class democracy.  If you are living in Pondicherry India (as opposed to Tennessee), it might be useful to promote the idea of a spiced wine such as Vermouth (especially the Italian variety - as this tends to be sweeter and offsets the usual flabbiness of tropical wines).

Like D., however, I am curious: what is the draw for Indian product if you live in a near south US state - not that there are not interesting wines from that colorful subcontinent?

Pondicherry is in a state called Tamil Nadu (TN) in India. I suppose that explains the draw for Indian product.

Pondicherry now renamed as Puducherry is not in Tamilnadu it is a state with its own legislature and

Chief Minister.

Snooth is great.  We even get geopolitical updates.

And that's a good thing, is it not?
