Ramspeck Merlot - In for a Case

Posted by JonDerry, Oct 12, 2013.

Yesterday proved to me that this wine is no fluke, it's a very good to great Napa experience on its own. Factor in the price of $14.39 at your local Costco (have found it at two stores down South here), and it may go down in my QPR Hall of Fame. Here are my CT notes, first from late August, and the other from yesterday.

"Thought this was a beauty. Licorice, plum, and with good freshness on the nose. Light to medium bodied palate, with nice florals, tasty tart red fruits and a little bit of green bell pepper popping out. Finishes well, medium in length and with good grip. While tasting this, I guessed at a Merlot based blend and the producer's website confirms this. 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Malbec, 5% Cab Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot. Lovely stuff. 13.5 ABV listed."

"Surprisingly enjoyed this even more the second time around, along with the shock that this wasn't just a fluke. The nose was open and rich with cassis, licorice, earth, vanilla/oak, and dark berries. It has medium plus body, with delicious red and black fruits, and good/judicious oak supporting. Sports mellow to moderate tannins and finishes well. An unexpected Napa glory. 13.5% Abv"

Producer Website:

Rowland Cellars makes this, which is a husband and wife team. The winemaker, Gerry Rowland, had a stint with Chappellet in the 90's, and hails from Australia. Together, they have 3 labels; Rowland, Cenay, and Ramspeck. With my stash of this fine Merlot, I'm hoping to source some of their 2010 Cabernet next.

For those aware of my storage situation. I had to improvise here at home, stuffing my 16 bottle cooling unit to the limit!

Outstanding, Jon.  I can't say that I've seen this in my local Costco, but the fact is I tend to look past Merlot much too quickly.  I will look more carefully, next time.

Don't think you'll regret it Mark but the stock may be dwindling as its been in stores for around 6 weeks and it's fairly low production (650+ cases or so).

By the way, it seems the comment you left wasn't picked up by Snooth. The comment ticker says 0, and I didn't get an e-mail notification. Looks like it's fixed now though.

Y'know, I think that they were futzing around back at the Snooth Golden Palace yesterday afternoon.  When I clicked on the "Publish" button, nothing happened.  Then I could not get to any Snooth page.   Obviously, it seems to be OK, today.

Nice, and nice price. This was offered recently by an Etailer for about $20 with high praise. It sounds even better coming from you!

As far as the site goes, we have had a few minor issues as of late. My account is all screwy because of the karma score updating which had to recount everything I've done very morning to update my score!

We're thinking of ways to trim those intensive data crawls hopefully reducing any inconvenience to you guys.

Yeah, this was quite a find...totally by accident as I was up at a neighbors birthday party. They, like most casual wine drinkers like to buy in the $8-15 range, and this was by far the most impressive wine they'd ever served. Glad I was able to score some, and to be plugged in to this kind of value. I'm now on their mailing list and will be on the lookout, as it seems their fruit sources and wine-making are on point.
