So... I figure you're coming back to this, but just resizing images to 142x142 with width= and height= on the IMG tag is... tacky. Rather, creating thumbnails in the format you want based on the uploaded image (stetch shortest dimension to 142--either in or out--then pick the center point and crop; that's all easy with ImageMagick or similar is SOP. For bonus points, let us pick the center point; cf, http://pics.livejournal.com/ (it's open source, just go steal it, so long as it's not GPL, and I don't think Brad Does That Thing).

Right. Well, the whole center point piece is nice but the quick fix was just to not stretch using the img tag. Resizing was already done to aspect under the hood.
I'll go for bonus points later. Big wins (wines?) today.
