I think a Barbaresco will work for me, and as far as white wine,Sauvignon Blanc.

This would actually be a tremendous task for me, to have to choose one red and one white to solely drink for the rest of my life.Mama mia!

LOL!  I know jking3702,, it's something none of us wants to do. I think I would have to round up all of my favorites and have a last grand tasting to pick my sole red wine and my sole white wine. This would be very difficult for me.

Red would be Shiraz. For white my choice is Viognier. Ask me  again in a year, and that might change!

UQ, great choice on the white, Viognier is so floral and crisp.

"ask me again in a year..."  That's not allowed! If I had to drink one wine for the rest of my life means one wine, not changing your mind every year! ;-)

I drink less and less cab as I spread my enthusiasm around, but I would drink really classic cabs (say, in the style of early to mid 90s; dmcker is snickering, but I didn't drink enough '68 BV George dlTour to choose them, and they aren't around in any real numbers). I love many kinds of wine, but whenever I go back to a great or even very good cab, I remember why people buy it and never venture farther.  On the white side, I would choose... champagne.   For the extravagance.

Now we don't have to limit ourselves to one label and vintage, I hope?  You're not requiring us to say, Mondavi Private Reserve 1990, for example?  That would be like only making love with one person in exactly the same way for the rest of your life.  Might as well not bother.

Any Vintage, any label, I don't want to be a sadist LOL!

So does it have to be variety or can it be appellation?  You could find red "Cotes du Rhone" that ranged from all grenache at the south end, to blends of g/s/m, to a few that are all syrah from the patches of the appellation that lie at the north.  Or is that going too far?

I would say one varietal or one blend of varietals for the red and the white, and yes it would be very difficult for all of us.

@Foxall - Thankfully this is hypothetical! :-) I can live with my choices, so far I have met a Viognier I haven't liked.

Vosne-Romanee Conti if red would suffice, though I get bored easily - even with quality.  I'd like to see GregT or dmcker chime in here...

Stay tuned for the white choice... I need a think on that one.

Take your time on the white zufrieden, I know this is not easy.So many great wines to choose from. I just had a bottle of Gewurtztraminer and started thinking " well, maybe this can be my sole white wine", when I previously choose a Sauvignon Blanc as my sole white wine. Ahhhhh!

Roli

Easy decision

Red wine and White wine

But at a push

White - Salon Champagne

Red - Penfolds Grange [Hey I am an Aussie!!!]

and Corona's with lime and Guinness

[and d'Yquem because that is a sticky and DRC because Pinot is needed for balance]

Either a nice Viognier a dry Reisling.  I really love a good Barolo but have been getting into Malbac wines lately.  Gosh, how do you choose?!

for th whit it was a very easy choice: "Les Cretes - Chardonnay(cuvee bois)" the best italian white wine for the year 2007. For the red I'd like to drink for the rest of my life "vino nobile di Montepulciano" composed by sangiovese

Red: Barbera

White: Gavi

To choose between the two?  I guess the Barbera, but I would miss so many others that it would not be a happy life.

I hear ya tulaw. I am realizing more and more how much wine is an important part of our lives, how much pleasure it brings to an indiviual and even more pleasure to a gathering where wine can be shared.

It's beautiful, the laughter that wine bring's, the relaxation it provides, the way it makes a meal that much better when properly paired, the excitment you get when someone gives you a bottle as a gift. It is awesome!

The great thing... WE CAN DRINK WHETEVER WE WANT !
