Pretty chill. Or cool. Well, it's ice cold at least.

Straight up? On the rocks? With a twist? No thanks. I prefer my whiskey with balls.

Had to be said.

zomg! thats utterly useless.

I am a big fan of ye old style bars that chip the ice cubes by hand, and bonus points if they give me 1 giant cube instead of a bunch of shavings which just melt too fast

REALLY? That seems like an awful lot of trouble.

I've probably been to a score of bars over the years in Tokyo that serve their rocks drinks with one big ball of ice. Oftentimes handchipped. Whisky I like neat, but I'll take my Zubrowka with the iceball anytime, unless the bar stores the bottle in a freezer, which is rare. Only problem is that some bars use smaller glasses, bigger iceballs, and thus less liquor. Guess they have to make up for the labor costs on the ice-chipping...

The theory is clear - larger cubes have a proportionally lower surface area, so melt slower. However, there are some practical issues. Firstly, you often end up with more ice - a 2" ball of ice has probably the volume of 5 or 6 cubes. I would never put 6 ice cubs in my whiskey. Secondly, it doesnt eliminate the problem - you still have ice melting into your drink. While the spherical balls look cool, I think its about time someone made a decent looking double walled / vacuum glass that could keep the liquids cool directly.
