Hunter Valley (Australia) Semillon
Posted by MarioRobles, Oct 22, 2008.

Since I am in Australia, I am just wondering if you know, like or have tasted Semillon from the Hunter Valley (Australia) when young and after 5 years of ageing...

Semillon from this region (250 kms from Sydney) is renowned for their Semillon and as Jancis Robinson OBE MW has said "Hunter Semillon is Australia's unique gift to the world".

I have to say, I am not pushing anything but I love this wine! specially when it is 5-7+ years old... I haven't found a better match to raw oysters than a nice, chilled glass of Hunter Valley Semillon...

I agree with your references....as an Aussie living in Connecticut, semillon is very hard to find. There is nothing like an aged Hunter Semiilon

Thanks! I live in Sydney and am just getting into Hunter Valley Semillons. I've bought some Hunter Semillons ranging in age from 6 to 17 years and would love some advice on when best to drink them. I have a little familiarity with young Semillon but I'm intrigued by the burnt toast and honey flavours I've read about aged Semillon.

They are certainly rare here in the states. It's hard enough selling Shiraz these days but if someone would bring some Hunter valley Semillon into the market I would bet that there's a waiting, albeit small, market for these wines.

Richard,

There are two 'stages' for Hunter Semillon, First is two weeks from bottling which is when it is fresh, crispy, lemony, limey, etc and Second at 5 years which is the time it takes to develop all those nutty, toasty flavours that make Hunter Semillon such a good wine...

As it is with all wines, some are meant to be consumed while young and fresh and other will not only be great at 5 years but will live for decades BUT it all depends on the quality, vintage and often the producer... it would be very helpful if you told me the names and vintages of the wines you have... the 17yr wine should be drunk... if not now, 10 years ago... but as I said; it all depends of those things...

If you want to have a great wine experience, I recommend that you buy any of the following wines;

Tyrrell's Vat 1 Semillon ($45 AUD)
Brokenwood ILR Semillon ($35 AUD)
McWilliams Lovedale Semillon ($50 AUD)

Chilled Semillon and freshly shucked oysters a match made in heaven!

PS. since these wines are not all cheap, get any Semillon from any of these three producers and you won't go wrong!

Enjoy it!

Hey Mario,

My Semillon purchases have arrived and I can't wait to get stuck into them with some oysters as you recommend. I have some Tyrell's Vat 1 Semillon 1992, Tyrell's Lost Block Semillon 1999, McWilliams Mount Pleasant "Elizabeth" Semillon 1998, Margan Estate Semillon 2003 and Annies Lane Clare Valley Semillon 2000.

I opened a bottle of the Tyrell's Lost Block last night and really enjoyed it. I bought it as a cheap ($10 at auction) quaffer to help me become more familiar with Hunter Semillons but it's really surprised me with its complexity and accessability. I'm really getting into aged whites at the moment and can't wait to try the Vat 1.
